The Oyster Mushroom Oyster Mushroom FactsOyster Mushroom, also known from its Latin term Pleurotus Ostreatus which means “sideway oyster”, is one of the most common edible wild mushrooms. It usually grows in dying hardwood trees between spring and fall seasons and is commonly found in temperate and subtropical forests around the world.Oyster Mushroom AppearanceThese white mushrooms have a fan-shaped cap that grows from around 5 to 25 centimetres or about 2 to 10 inches in diameter. It’s caps form into a convex shape when young and eventually flattens when aged. It is usually smooth and comes in different shades of pink, yellow, brown and tan. It has a distinct sweet smell that resembles the scent of anise or almonds. The stem of this type of mushroom grows laterally when it spawns from the side of a tree. On the other hand when it grows on top, it may develop a substantial thick dry stem that is hairy near the base. The spore print of this mushroom is white to lilac or gray and looks pretty when viewed in a dark background.Word of caution:There are different types of mushrooms that looks very similar to this mushroom so be very careful when looking for one especially if you intend to use it as food. Make sure to bring someone who is knowledgeable when searching the woods. Mushroom identification is very crucial because while there are good edible types out there, you might come across poisonous mushrooms that you would want to avoid.Oyster Mushroom CharacteristicsThe oyster mushroom is one of the few known carnivorous mushrooms. Its mycelium is capable of killing and digesting nematodes and bacteria. In some cases, it is even used in environmental clean-up through the process that we called mycorestoration. Mycorestoration is the process of using mushrooms to reduce pollution levels in a certain area. This process occurs when these mushrooms release a certain enzyme that causes the organic bonds in toxic materials to break down. If mycorestoration is the solution to the world’s pollution problems, then oyster mushrooms could be one of the answers.Oyster mushroom is one of the most commonly sought wild mushrooms because it is very versatile and easy to cultivate. It was first cultivated in Germany during the World War I but it has now grown commercially around the world for food. Oyster mushrooms can now be found in supermarkets along with its other types of edible mushrooms. Cultivated oyster mushrooms are not only sweet tasting but it can also be used as a subtle flavouring agent. Privacy Cookies: This site uses cookies.
