About 17 Squadron No 17 (City of Christchurch) Squadron is one of the largest and oldest Air Training Corps (ATC) units in New Zealand, formed in 1942 during World War II. The squadron has a proud history, having been recognised as the most efficient ATC squadron in New Zealand ten times since 2000, and was awarded the inaugural Chief of Air Force Unit Commendation in 2007. No 17 (City of Christchurch) Squadron parades on Thursday nights at the Christchurch Cadet Training Centre (43 Corsair Drive, Wigram) from 6:30 pm to 9:15 pm. Our training program includes: Aviation Studies Citizenship Skills Cadet Force Knowledge Dress and Ceremonial First Aid Skills Instructional Technique Navigation Bushcraft & Outdoor Safety Firearms Safety Marksmanship General Service Knowledge Leadership Skills Radio Procedures Public Speaking We offer NZQA accredited Unit Standards across our training program. Cadets can also complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award through the squadron. We conduct several weekend camps, tramps and exercises which provide our cadets the opportunity to take part in practical leadership and outdoor activities. New Zealand Cadet Forces The New Zealand Cadet Forces (NZCF) is a voluntary youth leadership training organisation, supported by the community and the New Zealand Defence Force, for 13 – 18 year olds. The NZCF is run by volunteers (Cadet Force Officers and support staff) and Defence Force personnel. The NZCF’s core values are respect, integrity, loyalty and discipline. Our mission is to develop confident, responsible young citizens who are valued within their community by providing them, within a military framework, safe, enjoyable and challenging opportunities. The NZCF consists of the Sea Cadet Corps, the New Zealand Cadet Corps, and the Air Training Corps. Each corps’ training, traditions and uniforms link them to their parent services of the Royal New Zealand Navy, the New Zealand Army, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force respectively.
