Series Overview

Obesity is a chronic condition associated with substantial risks of morbidity and mortality. It is also a risk factor for some of the leading causes of preventable death, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and certain cancers. With prevalence continuing to escalate, it is predicted that 1 in 2 Americans will have obesity by 2030. Of the groups most at risk for severe obesity are women, Black non-Hispanic adults, and low-income adults. Currently, underdiagnosis and undertreatment of obesity are frequent due to shortcomings in patient evaluation; uncertainty regarding approaches that support good adherence to behavioral and lifestyle modifications; and lack of thorough knowledge concerning the efficacy and safety of pharmacologic and surgical interventions. Patients with overweight or obesity often have multiple health concerns and may see several providers; therefore, a multidisciplinary management approach is required. The virtual Obesity Forum® 2021 is a 2-part multi-accredited series that aims to provide health care professionals with guidance on the appropriate use of therapies and strategies for delivering individualized care to patients with overweight or obesity of any age via a multidisciplinary team. It will incorporate didactic presentations as well as the patient perspective, interactive case-based discussions, and live question-and-answer sessions.

Target Audience

The intended audience for these activities is endocrinologists, family medicine physicians, internists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists and other health care professionals involved in the management of patients with overweight and obesity.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of these activities, participants should be better able to:

Incorporate a multidisciplinary approach to treating overweight and obesity that addresses comorbidities, and includes patients’ perspectives and shared decision-making. Advise patients appropriately about the effective use of commercial diets, exercise, and technology-driven interventions that can assist them in weight loss. Identify patients with obesity who may benefit from bariatric surgery, and provide post-surgical care as appropriate to reduce post-surgical weight gain. Recognize the growing prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, and interventions that can improve outcomes in this population. Select pharmacotherapy for weight management based on individual needs, as well as the latest clinical evidence on their safe and effective use.
