The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) today announced two pilot programs that will safely address a backlog of demand:Eligible persons with a Wisconsin driver license will be able to renew it onlineIndividuals under age 18, who successfully complete their required training and have the endorsement of a parent or guardian will be able to get their probationary driver license without completing a road test“The Division of Motor Vehicles has been at the forefront of making changes to protect the public and our associates during the public health emergency, while continuing to provide vital public services,” Secretary-designee Craig Thompson said. “These pilot programs represent innovative solutions to help Wisconsin address challenges created by the pandemic.”The pilot programs begin May 11. Each program eliminates the need for in-person visits to a DMV service center by enabling drivers to complete the tasks online. The pilots allow the public to get service more quickly while maintaining safety.These changes do not require any action outside of applying for the wavier HERE. Completion certificates will be sent from the driving school directly to DMV systems once a student has completed the full program. Please note a student must complete the full minimum program of 30/6/6 and students must hold a learners permit for a minimum of 6 months. We are still accepting new enrollments for our Online Course, and students can access that program during this time.At this time, we still plan to resume behind the wheel instruction no later than May 26, 2020. Under the Governor’s most recent order, we will not be resuming traditional classroom or behind the wheel instruction until at least May 26, 2020. Our offices will resume normal business hours on Monday, May 18. We will be open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you have a MV3001 application form for your permit and 60 days has passed since the original issue date, please email us to request a new form. Keep in mind, a MV3001 application form is only valid for 60 days from the date signed. The DMV is not enforcing the 60-day rule during this time. (You do not need to have your first behind the wheel within 60 days of receiving your permit). Once classroom and behind the wheel instruction resumes, we will be providing our employees with masks, and our vehicles will be sanitized after every student. Once behind the wheel instruction resumes, we will accommodate all students to the best of our ability. Because of the volume of students who will need to be scheduled, students will only be allowed to schedule one appointment at a time. Students who were on the schedule before the pandemic, will be contacted first to be placed back on our behind the wheel schedule. All vehicles will be sanitized after every driver. Hand sanitizer will be available inside the vehicle.
