Building on Success

Together we made it happen!

Dear Friends,

We are in the last year of my 8-years of service as mayor of Richmond, as my term limit approaches. My term ends in January of 2023, and I will have completed 27 years on the City Council, eight of them as mayor. I believe I am the longest continually serving City Council member in Richmond history.

I want to thank you for your support over the years that has made many things possible to make Richmond a bigger and better city. The last two years, dominated by COVID-19, have, however been difficult and the remainder of 2022 will be full of contentitious issues. But we will continue to persevere to overcome our challenges of housing and homelessness, climate change, education, transportation and crime.

Looking back at some of the things we have accomplished in the last 27 years, I would list:

Establishing a $35 million Promise Program to boost a college-going culture for Richmond high school graduates, the largest such program in California. A significant increase in how residents rate their quality of life in Richmond since the Community Survey started in 2007. More railroad Quiet Zones than any city in California The General Plan 2030 and Climate Action/Adaptation plan that are cutting edge documents supporting sustainability. Entitlement of two projects with over 6,000 dwelling units at Point Molate and Campus Bay. Completion of the Richmond Greenway, which has been the recipient of tens of millions of dollars in grants and continues to be improved. Expansion of the Bay Trail to have more miles completed than any city on San Francisco Bay. Completion of the ferry terminal and operation of Richmond - San Francisco ferry service. Establishing Rosie the Riveter WWII Homefront National Historical Park and Rosie the Riveter Trust. Adopting a Historic Preservation Ordinance, establishing the Historic Preservation Commission and saving and rehabilitating Richmond’s most iconic historic buildings, including the Ford Assembly Building, the Civic Center, the Maritime Child Care Center and the Santa Fe Reading Room Joining MCE Clean Energy as the first expansion city, saving Richmond residents millions of dollars on electricity and reducing greenhouse gases significantly. The MCE Solar 1 farm in Richmond is the largest publicly operated PV facility in the Bay Area.

Because of the support from my great staff, I have been able represent Richmond’s interests on multiple regional, state and national organizations, including the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Global Covenant of Mayors, The Climate Mayors, CivicWell (formerly Local Government Commission), League of California Cities, BCDC, Contra Costa LAFCO, ABAG, CCTA, WCCTAC, West County Mayors and Supervisors, Contra Costa Mayors Conference and MCE. I currently chair the board of MCE, which delivers renewable electricity to half a million accounts in four counties at a cost of half a billion dollars. MCE has a higher credit rating than PG&E!
