It is a real home from home where the hosts, Robyn and Mena Aitchison, offer Highland hospitality at its very best. One visit to The Dower House will never be enough. Once you have sampled the delights of this Scottish country home, you will simply have to return!In 2008, The Dower House won the prestigious Good Hotel Guide Cesar Award to become The Scottish Guesthouse of the Year. The same year Robyn and Mena were invited to meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace for their contribution and services to the British hospitality industry. Guest Bedrooms The Dower House  has two en-suite double bedrooms and one suite.All rooms are adorned with fresh flowers and have attractive views over the gardens. Bedroom facilities include television and tea and coffee making tray. There is free, reliable and fast WiFi throughout the whole house.Each bedroom has its own personality and is beautifully furnished to an exceptionally high standard, whilst retaining the original charm and character that is The Dower House experience.Bathrooms come with Victorian roll-top baths or a shower. Location - We are on the NC500 The Dower House Bed and Breakfast is located 14 miles northwest of Inverness, capital of the Highlands of Scotland. The house lies on the North Coast 500 (NC500) and is the perfect place to stop off on your tour. This location is easy to get to, being well served by all modes of transport.Inverness Airport is approximately 30 minutes drive away. Flights from London airports [Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton] and from Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham and Edinburgh arrive daily at Inverness Airport. There is also a direct flight to Amsterdam.Muir of Ord has its own railway station operating a local train service to Inverness, Thurso and Kyle of Lochalsh. The hotel is also 3hours drive to the Orkney ferry and is within easy reach of ferry ports to the Western Isles.The nearest mainline train station is at Inverness. There are many bus and coach services operating in the area. Car hire is available at Inverness airport and in Inverness city centre. THE DOWER HOUSE IS NOW CLOSED. MENA AND ROBYN HAVE RETIRED. Ask Mena about booking a boat trip. Genealogy The Dower House is a great place to base yourself for researching your family history. We have had guests from all over the world tracing their proud Scottish heritage.The Dower House is located in the heart of Mackenzie country. Other clans in the area include Ross, Munroe, Chisolm and Fraser. Inverness Library is home to a large archives going back to 1890, some burghs even date back the 1455. To find out more, including how to control cookies, see here: Cookie Policy History of The Dower House The Dower House was originally a traditional thatched farm house on the 3000 acre Highland Estate which was owned by the Mckenzies of Highfield from about 1540.At the beginning of the 1800s a conversion was made to the stone ornée style to give the lady dowager a residence out with Highfield House. This became The Dower House.In the 1840s the estate was rented to the infamous and ambitious James Falconer Gillanders who, on behalf of the absentee landlords, was responsible for evicting hundreds of families from the Highland Glens, many of whom were forced to emigrate to America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. This became known as the Highland Clearances people were evicted to make room for something far more profitable sheep!In later times, The Dower House became a much sought after residence and Lord Gladstone, Prime Minister 4 times between 1868 and 1894, during the reign of Queen Victoria, took The Dower House as a shooting lodge. At the beginning of the 20th century The Dower House was altered and extended further. In 1947 it became the Mckenzies family home when Highfield House was burnt to the ground. From then it remained very much the same until 1989 when Robyn and Mena bought the house from the Mckenzie family and converted it into a luxury hotel in 1988 then a B B in 2017.
