A mother and rabbinical student who dreams of becoming a rabbi some day, she is not only emerging as an important voice within Chicago s black community but on her way to becoming a national symbol of what can be achieved as a grassroots activist. The work Tamar has been doing for over three years to reduce gun violence in one South Side Chicago neighborhood has taught her that if you have the will, you can make a difference. With her magnetic, self-assured energy, Tamar credits Judaism for instilling in her this sense of civic duty. In one of many moving moments in the film, Tamar explains that Jews see problems in the world as cracks and her work with MASK is born out of her desire to repair the crack that is called gun violence. Join us online to learn with other young aspiring writers from the Lehigh Valley and beyond! Call 610-868-2971 Ext. 3185 with questions or to register. This fun summer workshop, taught by Literary Arts faculty member, Heath Mensher, is ideal for the young film buff or the young aspiring screenwriter as an entryway into the ‘reading’ and comprehension of film as a language. Exercises will include photo prompt writing, reactions, and live google-document discussion on the “short film of the day,” character creation, character motivations, script tricks and philosophies, music incorporation, and camera movement as narrative and storytelling. Please note that this is not a filmmaking workshop. Open to children entering 7th-9th grades (6th grade may be considered). Event Details In this two-week intensive, participants will study the fundamentals of narrative screenwriting, focusing on finding story ideas, character development, story structure, what makes strong film-writing, and finally, the basics of script format. The goal of this workshop is for participants to complete an outline for a short script and to write the first few scenes so that they have the tools to continue the screenwriting process on their own.Mondays and Thursdays, July 20, 23, 27 and 29 7:00 PM 9:00 PMInstructor: Sloan SealeRegister here: https://www.scribe.org/events/line-workshop-scriptwriting-summer-intensive Event Details This screening is part of our SHARED STORIES: THE INTERSECTION OF BLACK AND JEWISH EXPERIENCES IN AMERICA series (Every Monday night, July 13 August 3)This essential and edifying documentary chronicles the history of the Black-Jewish alliance in America. Revisiting critical points in history when Black and Jewish Americans faced hardships due to segregation and racism, the film begins with the founding of the NAACP in 1909 when Jews, Gentiles, and Black Americans initiated a new abolitionist movement and concludes with an examination of modern-day race relations. With its impressive arrray of storytellers and archival footage, the film explores the normalized bigotry of the Jim Crow South, the North s rampant bias in the areas of housing, employment, and education, and the civil rights era initiatives that brought Black and Jewish leaders together to support Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. s vision for a more just and equitable world. After registering, you will receive a Vimeo link to the film at 6:00 PM EST the evening of the screening. This link will be valid for 24 hours. Event Details This screening is part of our SHARED STORIES: THE INTERSECTION OF BLACK AND JEWISH EXPERIENCES IN AMERICA series (Every Monday night, July 13 August 3)Rabbi Joachim Prinz once cautioned that America must not become a nation of onlookers. America must not remain silent. Has his pronouncement ever been more relevant, more timely, than in present-day America? After being expelled from Berlin in 1937, Prinz immigrated to the United States where he witnessed the widespread racism against African-Americans. As rabbi of Temple B nai Abraham in Newark, NJ and later President of the American Jewish Congress, Prinz grew to be a key leader in the civil rights movement, working alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to organize the 1963 March on Washington. This compelling documentary traces the remarkable life of Prinz, his contributions to strengthening Jewish-Black relations in America, and the power of our collective voice in the universal struggle for peace. After registering, you will receive a Vimeo link to the film at 6:00 PM EST the evening of the screening. This link will be valid for 24 hours.Greater Philadelphia Film Office: One Parkway Building • 1515 Arch Street, 11th Floor • Philadelphia, PA 19102 Phone: 215.686.2668  |  E-mail: mail@film.org ABOUT US The Greater Philadelphia Film Office (GPFO) is a "film commission" representing southeastern Pennsylvania that officially serves the counties of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia. We are a member of the Association of Film Commissions International (AFCI).
