Description:

Children need champions. Get involved, speak out, volunteer, or become a donor and give every child a fair chance to succeed. UNICEF Innocenti is mobilizing a rapid research response in line with UNICEF’s global response to the COVID-19 crisis. The initiatives we’ve begun will provide the broad range of evidence needed to inform our work to scale up rapid assessment, develop urgent mitigating strategies in programming and advocacy, and preparation of interventions to respond to the medium and longer-term consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. The research projects cover a rapid review of evidence, education analysis, and social and economic policies. Manifesto by Italian adolescents on post COVID-19 future Young people reflect on the post COVID-19 future and write down their recommendations in the Manifesto "The Future We Want", launched today by UNICEF in Italy. UNICEF involved over 20 young people from the north and south of Italy, from different backgrounds and representatives of different realities, in an online consultation. The participatory process led to an online questionnaire by and for adolescents. Among the focuses: satisfaction with life, relational well-being, economic well-being, education and job access, environment and health. Over 2,000 young people aged between 15 and 19 responded to the survey. Visit the page Digital Connectivity During COVID-19: Access to vital information for every child This research brief explores data from 22,000 12-15 year old's to answer three research questions. 1) How much do we know about children’s basic access to the internet across the globe? 2) Do children regularly use the internet to access health information? 3) Are children able to verify the truth of online information? Visit the page Spain’s Basic Income Response to COVID-19 Spain has been hard hit by Covid-19, both in terms of high death toll and worsening economic conditions. Government lockdowns to contain the spread of the virus left millions of households without earnings or temporary unemployed. A recent report anticipates a 13% decline in GDP in the worst-case scenario. This is a worrying prediction for a country characterised by high unemployment and high levels of extreme poverty, even before the crisis. But from this adversity comes an opportunity. Webinar: Remote Learning & Beyond #COVID19 On Thursday 18 June at 15:00 CET | 09:00 EST, UNICEF Office of Research-Innocenti presented its fourth Leading Minds Online webcast series ‘What the Experts Say - Coronavirus and Children: Remote Learning and Beyond’. A panel of high-level experts looked at how the global pandemic and resulting school closures are worsening learning gaps, and deepening the learning crisis. Visit the page PODCAST: COVID-19 and child education: Lessons learned A recent discussion with UNICEF Innocenti education researchers on efforts to rapidly gather evidence on how to provide equitable education with millions of children now forced to learn at a distance. How are researchers able to work during lock-down? What technologies are countries using in low and middle income countries? How can educators monitor student and school progress remotely? Visit the page Sport for development programmes during COVID-19 This blog explores how Sport for Development (S4D) organisations have responded and adapted their programming to support children during the COVID-19 crisis. S4D organisations use sport as a tool to catalyse positive change in the lives of children, youth and the communities they live in. Interviews with S4D organizations, conducted as part of the ongoing research commissioned by the Barça Foundation and UNICEF partnership, revealed that organizations are innovating to adapt to the current crisis through three key interconnected practices: Children need champions. Get involved, speak out, volunteer, or become a donor and give every child a fair chance to succeed. Digital Connectivity during COVID-19: Access to vital information for every child Children’s digital access – or lack thereof – during the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly determined whether children can continue their education, seek information, stay in touch with friends and family, and enjoy digital entertainment. With over 1.5 billion children across 190 countries confined to their homes, active video games or dance videos may also be their best chance to exercise. The rationale for closing digital divides has never been starker or more urgent. Visit the page Ethical Considerations for Evidence Generation Involving Children on the COVID-19 Pandemic This paper identifies key ethical considerations when undertaking evidence generation involving children during the mitigation stage of the pandemic (emergency phase), on subject matter relating to COVID-19 once the pandemic has been contained, and once containment policy measures, including lockdowns, have been lifted (post-emergency phase). While the COVID-19 pandemic is undoubtedly a global crisis, with evidence generation activities raising critical ethical issues that have been captured in the literature and relevant guidelines, there are specificities relating to this emergency that must be considered when unpacking potential ethical issues. Visit the page Methodological Brief on Evidence Synthesis #4: Collating and analysing studies for synthesis This series of eight briefs, produced by the UNICEF Office of Research – Innocenti, is intended to provide guidance on how to undertake, commission and manage evidence synthesis products such as systematic reviews, rapid evidence assessments and evidence gap maps. Visit the page COVID-19 and children, in the North and in the South This paper aims to document the likely direct and indirect impacts of the COVID-19 crisis in developed and developing countries. It also aims to identify potential urgent measures to alleviate such impacts on children. Visit the page Children need champions.
