Description:

Ford has introduced a new version of its F-150 called the Tremor, which is perfect for those who find the FX4 package a little lacking in terms of off-road capability, but don’t want to step up to the Raptor.Available for the 2021 model year, the F-150 Tremor is based on the SuperCrew configuration with a bed measuring 5.5 feet. Power comes from a 3.5 litre EcoBoost V6 engine that pushes out 400 hp and 678 Nm of torque, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. The company is offered the pick-up with standard, mid and high equipment groups, all of which included significant suspension upgrades over a regular F-150. These include retuned springs front and rear for increased ground clearance, while the front hub knuckles and upper control arms have also been revised.New Tremor-specific monotube dampers have also been added to the front, while twin tube shocks are fitted to the rear, with both sets tuned for softer damping at low speeds, with additional damping and control when dealing with more difficult terrain. These also increases the suspension travel by an inch at the front, while it is up 1.5 inches for the rear.Adding to the mix are 18-inch matte wheels paired with 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tyres, which not only contributes to the added ground clearance, but also provides a one-inch wider stance. Along with a Raptor-style bash plate up front, the Tremor has an approach angle of 27.6 degrees, breakover angle of 21.2 degrees and departure angle of 24.3 degrees. Ford also throws in a locking front and rear differentials as standard and provides the option of a Torsen limited-slip front differential across all equipment levels. Tremor models with the high equipment package also get a torque-on-demand transfer case similar to the one used in the Raptor. To make the Tremor recognisable, it gets a unique grille with functional vents and a blacked-out Ford oval, with Active Orange accents throughout the exterior. Side running boards that are inspired by the Raptor also make their way onto the body, while a cutout rear bumper features dual exhausts flanking two recovery hooks. Inside, you get more Active Orange details, including the seat trim with special stitching, as well as the finishing for the dashboard, centre console and doors. An auxiliary power switch pack mounted on the ceiling allows owners to easily wire up various add-ons like winches, air compressors or lights. In addition to the Normal, Sport, Tow/Haul, Eco, Slippery, Deep Snow/Sand and Mud/Rut modes, the Tremor also gains a Rock Crawl mode, which automatically engages the rear locking differential, turns off stability and traction control, reduces throttle response, adjusts shift points and displays the available 360-degree camera view on the center screen. That camera is a cost option, along with other items like Trail Turn Assist that reduces steering radius in tight off-road terrain situations by applying brakes to the inside rear wheel. Trail Control can also be added on, acting like cruise control for off-road use, while the Trail Toolbox comes with a set of off-road assist features, including Trail One-Pedal Drive that lets drivers modulate the throttle and brakes with just one pedal press to move forward, release to brake. Indonesia is increasingly becoming an electric vehicle (EV) industry force to be reckoned with, as the Southest Asian country is making great strides towards becoming a key player in the field as a manufacturer of EV batteries, wrote PwC Indonesia automotive industry expert Hendra Lie in Nikkei Asia. President of Indonesia Joko Widodo has repeatedly voiced his intent for the country to become an industrial economy from a commodity-driven one, which he plans to achieve through a so-called massive downstreaming in the extractive industry, Lie wrote. In October, Reuters reported that the state-owned battery manufacturing company a joint venture comprised on Mind ID, oil and gas company Pertamina and Indonesian electricity firm Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will be formed for the creation of an end-to-end Indonesia domestic supply chain for EV batteries, with the aim of producing in the region of 8 GWh to 10 GWh each year over the next four years. The companies forecast that global battery demand will grow four-fold over the next seven years to 777 GWh, says Lie. The three firms that make up the consortium are also in talks with EV battery producers CATL from China and LG Chem from South Korea, with potential investments worth up to US$20 billion (RM81.4 billion) for further development of the EV battery supply chain, according to Lie.Indonesia is focusing on the development of two nickel-based battery blends nickel-cobalt-manganese, and lithium-cobalt-nickel-aluminium two of the most widely used combinations for lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles today, Lie said. Demand for EV batteries is compounded by automakers in the US, Europe and China ramping up EV research amid growing public awareness of vehicular emissions. In China, the world s largest car market, the PwC Digital Auto Report 2020 has found that 68% of consumers under 40 surveyed said they prefer electric powertrains over petrol, while the preference for EVs was shared by 46% of German consumers and 37% of United States consumers surveyed. These markets mentioned are potentially lucrative ones for Indonesia as car manufacturers will need a lasting supply of nickel for batteries in future EVs, Lie observed. To that end, American EV maker Tesla was reported last month to be due for a meeting with high-level Indonesian officials sent by president Widodo, that is part of the country s promotion of its Omnibus job creation law. Indonesia will still need to depend on foreign investment in order to realise its EV battery production ambitions, Lie observed, as the country still lacks the technology required for the efficient processing of raw metals into batteries. The country also needs foreign investors help with the workload, and at the same time transfer technology to their local Indonesian partners for the industry s future development.Indonesia does however have the biggest reserves of nickel, said president Widodo, and the country could provide the lowest EV battery manufacturing costs of any country in Asia. The Omnibus law aims to improve Indonesia ease of doing business by cutting red tape, among other measures for fast-tracking processes by easing regulations in sectors such as land procurement for public interest, investment, taxation, national strategic projects, economic zones as well as research and development, said Lie. These measures are hoped to ease concerns from business people and investors regarding the country s bureaucratic red tape, which saw Indonesia ranked 73 out of 190 countries on the 2019 World Bank Ease of Doing Business Index, wrote Lie. The country s government is aiming to improve its ranking by 40% over the next three to four years. The implementation of the Omnibus law reflects the Indonesian government s seriousness in providing businesses with certainty in order to attract more investment for the country s growth, according to Lie. This means that the time is right for key global EV and battery players to turn their attention toward Indonesia for its rich natural and human resources, he observed. When it rains, it pours. That must be the recall situation now at Hyundai-Kia, which has been forced to call back hundreds of thousands of cars in the US over fire risks. There s more, but this time it s in Hyundai s own backyard.According to South Korea s transport ministry, Hyundai is planning to recall a total of 50,864 Kona Electric and Nexo fuel cell vehicles in the country due to faulty electronic braking systems, Reuters reported. The EVs braking systems may not function due to software defects, authorities said, although they did not mention if the issue has led to accidents. The Korean recall would cover around 40,000 units of the Kona Electric produced between May 2019 and November 2020, and 10,138 units of the Nexo hydrogen fuel cell SUV made from January 2018 to November 2020. Kia also plans to recall 1,895 units of the Soul EV for a similar issue. It s not clear if this will affect the EVs in other markets. The Kona Electric is one of the best-selling electric cars in Europe due to its strong specs and keen pricing the newswire s report points out that Kona Electric sales outside of South Korea accounted for more than three quarters of the model s total sales. This is a separate issue from the previous Kona Electric recall, which involves at least 74,000 units worldwide. That one is to fix a fire risk after more than a dozen examples caught fire in Korea, Canada and Europe over the last two years. Toyota isn’t the only company to talk about its electrification plans, as its luxury arm has also outlined its own strategy called Lexus Electrified first brought forth by the LF-30 concept. This strategy covers both technology and design, with the latter being previewed by an upcoming concept car that will be revealed in the first quarter of 2021.Starting with the concept, the teaser image shows the vehicle’s face, which sports an updated version of the brand’s famous spindle grille that looks familiar, but is made to appear sharper and even more aggressive. Slimmer headlamps flank said grille, while the lack of a combustion engine allows the haunches to be made even more prominent. The core Lexus Electrified technology will be the company’s Direct4 Wheel Drive Force Control, which is an electric drive control system designed for the next generation of Lexus electric and hybrid vehicles. On EVs, electric motors are fitted on both axles, with the system controlling the delivery of drive torque between the motors, as well as braking force to all four wheels, ensuring optimum traction depending on driving conditions.Lexus says the Direct4 system provides an intuitive operation and is highly responsive, “giving the driver a genuine sense of being fully connected with the vehicle.” Additionally, it provides an ideal balance of predictability and excitement, with powerful, linear acceleration, exhilarating cornering, plus quietness and comfort that is key to the brand’s DNA.As for hybrids, there will still be an engine with a hybrid transmission at the front, while the rear gets an e-axle. Both versions of the Direct4 system are demonstrated in an accompanying video featuring two experimental development vehicles based on the Lexus’ current-generation chassis, although the system will inevitably make its way to e-TNGA-based cars in the future. Now in Thailand is the refreshed 2021 Honda CBR150R sports bike, priced at 92,570 baht (RM12,520) for the base model, while the ABS-equipped CBR150R goes for 99,700 baht (RM13,485). Direct competition to the CBR150R in Malaysia is the Yamaha YZF-R15, retailing at RM11,988, without ABS.New for the CBR150R in 2021 are four new colour variants with styling following cues from the Honda CBR1000RR super bike. These are Sword Silver Metallic, Asteroid Black Metallic and Dynamic Red for the ABS version while the base model comes in Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic.Inside the engine room, mechanicals stay the same, with a single-cylinder, DOHC mill displacing 149 cc and producing 17.1 hp and 14.4 Nm of torque going through a six-speed gearbox. This compares against the YZF-R15 s 19.3 hp and 15 Nm of torque. Braking is done with single hydraulic discs front and rear with the CBR150R ABS equipped with wave pattern discs. Suspension is done with telescopic forks in front, preload-adjustable while the rear has a preload-adjustable monoshock.A new steel trellis frame tie everything together on the CBR150R with seat height set at 787 mm. LED lighting is used throughout and the CBR150R carries fuel inside a 12-litre tank. Gymkhana 11 is set to debut really soon, but before that, there’s a trailer to give us some idea of what to expect. If you’ve watched the previous instalment in the series, you’re in for a treat as there’s plenty of controlled mayhem that will take place.Based on the trailer, Pastrana will pilot a heavily modified WRX STI around his hometown of Annapolis, Maryland in the United States. In some of the action shots shown, we see the souped-up Subie sliding around, jumping over water and being accompanied by a stunt plane as well.Even the latest, second-generation BRZ makes an appearance on the docks, engaged in a spot of tandem drifting with its all-wheel drive sibling. However, where the BRZ packs a stock engine under the bonnet, Pastrana’s ride is a lot more complex. After the trailer concludes, we are taken on a guided tour of the WRX STI that will star in the latest Gymkhana film. Decked out in full Hoonigan livery, the car also wears some serious aero components, which is derived from rallycross, as explained by Dan Anctil, director of motorsports at Subaru USA and Vermont SportsCar.According to Anctil, the aero package must enable the car to stay planted during high-speed manoeuvres but also enable it to perform controlled jumps. This includes fitting an active rear wing that can be raised or lowered by Pastrana via a button on the steering wheel, adding or removing downforce at the rear to keep things balanced. He adds that the car came fresh from the factory before undergoing modifications to have a shorter wheelbase and wider track, with a few parts like the lights and front doors being retained. However, all body panels are made from carbon-fibre, including the flat underbody covers. Of course, one of the highlights of the car is its engine, which is moved back by eight inches to bring the weight as close to the middle of the car as possible – ditto the Sadev six-speed sequential transmission. The billet EJ engine uses a rallycross-derived crankshaft, an anti-lag system and has a displacement of 2.3 litres, generating 869 hp together with a large turbocharger and race fuel. Those exhausts are also bespoke and sport STI branding on them – the latter 3D printed from Inconel. Anctil also says the engine has been highly reliable ever since it was bolted together, as it has survived chassis and engine dyno testing, as well as high-speed testing, jump testing and filming.A stripped-out interior is fitted with a custom roll cage and a whole bevy of electronic systems to keep an eye on all vehicle systems, including providing diagnostic data. A separate telemetry system also provides info on drift angles and vehicle speed – the latter is important during the jump sequence. It’s certainly quite a machine, and we’ll get to see it in action when Gymkhana 11 is released later on YouTube. The Genesis GV70 has made its full debut after being previewed over the past few months, with the luxury arm of Hyundai providing specifications and features of its second SUV for the Korean market. In terms of dimensions, the GV70 measures 4,715 mm long, 1,910 mm wide, 1,630 mm tall and packs a wheelbase that spans 2,875 mm. These figures correspond with the SUV’s position below the GV80 in Genesis’ model line-up, with the larger of the two being 4,945 mm long, 1,975 mm wide, 1,715 mm tall and with a 2,955 mm wheelbase.Despite the size difference, the GV70 gets the same Smartstream T-GDi petrol engines as its larger sibling. The first is a 2.5 litre four-cylinder that makes 304 PS (300 hp) and 422 Nm of torque, which is joined by a larger 3.5 litre V6 rated at 380 PS (375 hp) and 530 Nm – the latter takes 5.1 seconds to complete the zero to 100 km/h sprint. On the diesel front, the GV70 gets the Smartstream 2.2 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel used by the latest G80, with 210 PS (207 hp) and 441 Nm. All engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and can be had with front- or all-wheel drive, except the V6 variant that is AWD only. Of the three engines, the diesel has the best combined fuel consumption at 13.6 km/l (7.4 l/100 km), followed by the 2.5 litre unit at 10.7 km/l (9.3 l/100 km) and the V6 at 8.6 km/l (11.6 l/100 km). Design-wise, the Genesis SUV adopts cues seen on other models in the range, with two-tier headlamps and taillights, with the former flanking the brand’s signature Crest Grille. The GV70 also cuts a sleeker profile compared to the bulkier GV80, with a more distinctive window line and prominent C-pillars. Inside, the GV70’s dashboard differs significantly from its stablemates with a cleaner look that is highlighted by a single character line that runs from the door panels through the air vents and across the gauge cluster cowl.A large 14.5-inch infotainment display dominates this space, while below it, the lighting and climate controls are clustered into a gloss black section with a contrast surround. A high centre console brings the rotary gear selector closer to the driver, along with various storage cubbies, while the two-spoke steering wheel is similar to one fitted in the GV80.Other items include a 12.3-inch TFT LCD 3D digital instruement cluster, four-zone climate control (with rear vents and controls), a dual-filter air purifier system, leather upholstery, ambient lighting as well as all-seat heating and ventilation, among others. Also offered is an optional Sport package for a more dynamic look, which adds a dark chrome mesh for the grille, new bumpers, black bezels, prominent round exhaust outlets and a choice of Sport-exclusive 19- and 21-inch wheels. The cabin gets also gets an exclusive three-spoke steering wheel and colours (black, red and blue), along with optional carbon-fibre details on the console and doors. Cars with this package also gain a rear electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD) that distributes torque for optimum traction during sudden cornering, high-speed turning or while off-road. Depending on variant, adaptive suspension is also fitted as standard equipment on the GV70, along with launch control and a drive mode system. On the last bit, AWD models get a Multi Terrain Control mode that joins Eco, Comfort, Custom, Sport and Sport+).There’s also no shortage of technologies available, with safety and driver assistance-related ones being eight airbags, a surround view monitor, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW) and Forward Attention Warning (FAW), navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC), Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) and Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA).There’s also Highway Driving Assist II (HDA II), which is a form of semi-autonomous driving that helps drivers to change lanes when the turn signal is activated, and by responding to close-range cut-ins in instances of traffic congestion when vehicles are moving at low speeds. Another form of autonomy is Remote Smart Parking Assist, whereby the vehicle can guide itself into a parking spot using just the key fob. However, drivers will still need to be alert and ready to take over with either function. As announced previously, the GV70 also features fingerprint authentication system that is tied to the Genesis CarPay in-car payment service, along with other functions such as valet mode, along with vehicle entry and start. A radar rear-seat reminder system also makes an appearance to alert driver of pets or passengers in the rear, alerting the driver in multiple phases upon detection. The system is so accurate that it is capable of detecting small respiratory movements like an infant’s breathing, and its field of detection extends to the cargo area as well. Another feature being touted is AR Navigation, which uses augmented reality to provide more accurate navigation using the infotainment display. The system in its most basic form shows left or right direction icons, but an improved version can provide directions that indicate the exact direction based on the destination and its location at that very moment.
