Wherever we are, in every place, at every hour…let us hold in our heart and love, honor adore and serve, praise and bless…the Most High and Supreme Eternal God, Trinity and Unity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. - Earlier Rule of the Friars Minor, Chapter 23St. Bonaventure, the holy follower of St. Francis and great theologian inspired by him, reminded his readers that belief in the Holy Trinity "is the fundamental foundation of our faith, most worthy of belief and necessary for salvation." At times, the mystery of the Trinity (God as both three persons yet one God) may seem very abstract and far from our daily lives. Yet St. Francis found this mystery both beautiful and important, and he spoke of the Trinity many times in his writings. Most beautiful, perhaps, was the prayer of thanksgiving he placed in the Earlier Rule, recognizing how this mystery is at the heart of our faith: "All-powerful, most Holy, Almighty and supreme God, Holy and Just Father…we thank Your for Yourself, for through Your holy Will and through Your only Son, with the Holy Spirit, You have created everything spiritual and corporeal, making us in Your own image and likeness."
