In the spring of 2016, I discovered a cool new wool shoe online. I ordered a pair, fell in love, and immediately wrote about them in Knitter’s Review. It turns out, this was something like @allbirds second week of operation. Still a small startup, they noticed the sales spike, traced it to me, and wrote me the loveliest email.
Fast-forward a few months, I got to visit them in their first San Francisco office. I met Tim and Joey and Julie and Lucy, all lovely humans. We had sandwiches and they showed me swatches of other fabrics they were looking at, and we talked wool, and it was heaven.
Whelp, today these kids’ little startup launched on the NASDAQ under ‘BIRD,’ with the first trade valuing the company at around $3.04 billion. Not that anyone’s counting.
While they’ve moved well beyond being only “that wool shoe company,” wool is still a core part of their product offerings. The number of people who’ve woken up to wool thanks to Allbirds is almost incalculable.
I realize I’m like the totally obscure elementary school teacher bragging about having had one student, for half a semester, who went on to win a Pulitzer, but so be it. This is a bonkers day, and I’m proud of them....

It’s getting to be my favorite time of year, when the bugs are (mostly) gone and you can sit outside by a fire long after dark without turning into a popsicle. It took not one, not two, but three stray embers burning holes straight through her fleece for a Certain Someone to agree that wool may be a wiser choice for campfire attire. On the lap, a blanket from @twig_home that I’ve had for years. Feet kept cozy and not aflame by @giesswein_. And on top, the @wuru_wool Merino zip-up that I wrote about this week on The Wool Channel. (The chair I’m sitting on, however, is just begging to melt. Baby steps, right?)...

I’m sitting out Rhinebeck and all the peripheral festivities this weekend. I didn’t expect it to feel as weird and poignant as it does, mostly because that’s where I’ve launched all but one of my books. The place holds a ton of memories. To make up for not being there, I’ve decided to place a cup of cider 100 yards away and spend two hours inching up to it. Oh, and I’ve recorded a Rhinebeck storytime that you can listen to over at The Wool Channel. (Link in profile.)...

I hadn’t planned on going wading this evening, but if you arrive at the beach and it’s high tide and THIS is what greets you…it’d be rude not to accept the invitation. There was even a tiny cloud iridescence. Well played, Mother Nature....
