Pope Sixtus 1 (115-125) There is a claim, that he wrote two letters about the Godhead, but there is no actual evidence. He may have been involved in the institution of a Sunday Passover. Pope Telesphorus (125-136) It is inaccurately claimed that he established that on Christmas eve priests could say three masses and he introduced the Gloria in excelsis Deo , yet Christmas was not observed in Rome until over 200 years after his death. Pope Hyginus (136-140) He is claimed to have come up with the idea of godparents . He may have been involved in the institution of a Sunday Passover. The heretic Valentinus appeared by his time. Pope Pius I (140-155) He was inspired by the ideas of the heretic Justin expressed in the Dialogo con Trifone . He did observe a Sunday Passover. He was ineffective in stopping the heretic Valentinus. Pope Anicetus (155-166) Bishop Anicetus (perhaps the first clear bishop of Rome , none were called popes until the late fourth century) was a collaborator with the heretic Justin, and ineffective against the heretics Marcion and Valentinus. Pope Soter (166-175) Bishop Soter is claimed to have called marriage a sacrament. He is supposedly the one to fix the Sunday date of Passover (though others have been cited for this as well). Pope Eleutherius (175-189) He allegedly dispensed with the obligations of Christians to follow several dietary laws of biblical origin. He went along with the Sunday date of Passover and decided against publicly opposing the Montanists. Pope Victor I (189-199) He was the first Roman bishop to attempt to act like a pope, but was somewhat unsuccessful. He attempted to force those in Asia Minor to accept Roman Passover Sunday tradition over the Bible and the teachings of the apostles. Polycrates, in response, told him those greater than I have said 'We ought to obey God rather than man' . Pope Zephyrinus (199-217) He was the first bishop publicly accused of accepting bribes (and this was by one now recognized as a saint by Roman Catholics). He refused to condemn the Montanists and seemed to have had a confused view of the Godhead. Pope Callistus (217-222) He is the first bishop known to have been a criminal prior to his election. He was also accused of a variety of corrupt acts, including allowing indulgences and infanticide (abortion). Hippolytus of Rome A third century Catholic saint and one elected to be Bishop of Rome who condemned others for lowering standards like taking bribes (Zephyrinus) and allowing abortions (Callistus). CG7.ORG This is a website for those interested in the Sabbath and churches that observe the seventh day Sabbath. CG7-D: Church of God, (Seventh Day): History and Teachings Nearly all COG's I am aware of trace part of their history through some affiliation with this group. Loren Stacy is the president of the largest CG7 USA group (Denver). Do you know much about them? CG7-S: Church of God 7th Day, Salem (West Virginia) This group formed by A.N. Dugger in 1933 when he split from the CG7 group he was once president of. CGCF: Beware, Doctrinal Compromise is in the Air! Discusses some doctrines that CGCF may have had to change in order to merge with United. CGI: Teachings of the Church of God, International This article focuses on where CGI differs from the old WCG. CGG: Church of the Great God This group, led by John Ritenbaugh, says the bride must first be made ready (it de-emphasizes the priority of public proclamation of the gospel). Might this lead to a selfish bride? This group also seriously seems to misunderstand end-time prophecy. CGPKG: Concerns About Ronald Weinland's Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God Ronald Weinland falsely claimed to be one of the two witnesses God is raising up, that the Great Tribulation began on December 14, 2008, Jesus would return late September 2011, that Jesus would return on May 27, 2012, and later that Jesus would return on May 19, 2013. Why else does the Bible show that Ron Weinland is a false prophet? He has other views which show he may not be part of the Church of God.? CGSC: Church of God, Southern California This article discusses some of how David Antion's group differs from the old WCG. CEM: Teachings of Christian Educational Ministries The late Ron Dart's former confederation (not a church). COGaIC: Church of God, an International CommunityThis is the group led by David Hulme. ICG: Intercontinental Church of God This was Garner Ted Armstrong's last group; it is now led by Mark Armstrong. J7DCG: Jerusalem 7th Day Church of God A sacred name group claiming A.N. Dugger and a Jerusalem headquarters. LCG: What About the Living Church of God? Are there Doctrinal Differences with the Continuing Church of God? PCG: Teachings Unique to the Philadelphia Church of God Simply calling oneself 'Philadelphia' does not make one so (see Revelation 3:7-9), nor does Gerald Flurry calling himself "that prophet" make it so. This article provides many quotes from this group which tries to look faithful. RCG: Why Not the Restored Church of God? This group, led by David Pack, claims to be the most faithful. It claimed it was the most faithful, but like others had different priorities. TPM: Teachings of Triumph Prophetic Ministries William Dankenbring's former ministry--incorrectly speculated on various dates and held to some odd doctrines. UCG: Differences between the Living Church of God and United Church of God This article provides quotes information from two of the largest groups which had their origins in WCG as well as commentary. Armstrong used to teach and still be in WCG? This article addresses this important issue. Banned by HWA and Ambassador Watch There are various ones that oppose the Church of God, but they will not prevail (Matthew 16:18). This is an article about some anti-Church of God tactics. Is the Genuine Church of God a Cult? There are misleading statements on the internet that this article tries to address. COGlinks is a listing of pro-COG sites (although, they do not all agree with all the faithful views or doctrinal positions and some are not truly COG). Services normally are held on Saturday (the seventh day Sabbath) at 2:00 p.m. and on biblical holy days (Leviticus 23; I Corinthians 5:7-8). This small group meets in Arroyo Grande or Grover Beach, California (part of the 'Five Cities' region of southern San Luis Obispo County). Since one member is chemically sensitive, members, visitors, and guests are asked to not wear perfumes or colognes. It is located near the Pacific Ocean. It is approximately halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Services are in the five cities of Arroyo Grande, Oceano, Grover Beach, Pismo Beach, and Shell Beach (which is technically part of Pismo Beach--the original Five Cities were called Arroyo Grande, Halcyon, Fair Oaks--renamed Oceano--and Grover City--renamed Grover Beach; currently and some consider Avila Beach the fifth city and not Shell Beach). This Church of God writer is Bob Thiel, Ph.D. (for more information click on Who is COGwriter?). Most churches claim to believe the Bible, so how is the Church of God any different? Most professing Christian groups accept certain principles of biblical interpretation (called hermeneutics) which essentially places the opinions and traditions of various scholars ahead of the literal word of God. Jesus also found this to be a problem in his day (Matthew 15:1-9). The real Church of God teaches the Bible should be used, where possible, to interpret itself (Isaiah 28:9-10; 2 Timothy 3:15-17). One of the most obvious differences would be members of the Church believe that keeping all of the ten commandments (both in the letter and in the spirit) shows love towards God and neighbor. Other obvious differences in belief include observing the biblical holy days, in proclaiming the Kingdom of God, the Godhead is family which we will be able to join in the future, it is our duty to warn the world of the results of rejecting God's way of life (see also The Gospel of the Kingdom of God), in leading a peaceful life (hence we refuse military service), in avoiding unclean meats, in the resurrections, in the hope of the salvation for all humankind, and in being led by the spirit of God to build character through the challenges of life (see also The MYSTERY of GOD s PLAN: Why Did God Create Anything? Why Did God Make You? and/or What is the Meaning of Life?). We also believe that since God is a God of love, He has a plan for every person (please see the article What is the Meaning of Life?) and that all will be offered salvation for details, see the free onlin book: Universal OFFER of Salvation, Apokatastasis: Can God save the lost in an age to come? Hundreds of scriptures reveal God's plan of salvation) and nearly everyone will be saved (please see the article Hope of Salvation: How the Continuing Church of God Differs from Protestantism). Although there are a few similarities to the Eastern Orthodox Church, our repudiation of idols and icons, plus other practices, demonstrate that our doctrines are truly more orthodox. It is the highly dedicated in the real Church of God that will finish the final phase of the work before (Matthew 24:14; Daniel 11:32-33) and during (Revelation 11:3-14) the Great Tribulation and Day of the Lord.This is the personal home page of Bob Thiel, the Church of God writer AKA COGwriter.
