Spelling Bee Wiki!

Each year, over ten million students participate in local spelling bees. The local bee is sponsored by a newspaper and the winner of the local bee travels to Washington, DC for what is known as Bee Week. This quest was documented by the movie Spellbound. About two hundred and sixty kids from throughout the country participate in many activities during Bee Week, but the main event is the spelling bee. All spellers participate in rounds one and two. Round one is a written test of twenty five words, and round two is an oral round. The spellers get one point for every word spelled correctly. Usually around 18 or 19 correct words in rounds one and two will allow the speller to proceed to round three. About 90 of the two hundred and sixty make it to round three. After about a dozen more rounds, the bees are usually over. In 2005, Anurag Kashyap won with the word appoggiatura. In 2006, Katherine "Kerry" Close won with Ursprache. Evan O'Dorney won with serrefine in 2007. The 2008 81st Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held on May 28th and 29th.
