West Virginia, Born Out Of The Civil War, Grapples With Confederate Monuments As statues of Confederate generals have been toppled or ordered down across the American South, all still stand in West Virginia, the only state born out of the American Civil War. One hundred fifty-seven years ago Saturday, West Virginia seceded from Virginia to join the Union and reject the Confederacy. Across the state, there are 21 statues and memorials honoring Confederate generals and soldiers, according to data compiled by the Southern Poverty Law Center . Like many monuments elsewhere... Trump is still attending the rally. Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate Amy McGrath spoke Saturday about food insecurity, the coronavirus pandemic, and ongoing protests for racial justice in a visit to a Murray food pantry and soup kitchen, three days before an increasingly competitive primary election. Our twin pandemics in the forefront at the moment — racism and health — underscore a democracy in crisis. Updated at 7:17 p.m. ET President Trump has removed Geoffrey Berman, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, from office, ending the tenure of a top Justice Department official whose office has overseen the prosecutions of several of the president's associates. Attorney General William Barr announced the termination Saturday, less than a day after initially suggesting that Berman was resigning — only to be contradicted by Berman himself. With whisks in hand, bakers across the world went into their kitchens this week with the same goal: to fight racism. They were preparing for their virtual bake sales as part of the Bakers Against Racism movement that was founded by three Washington, D.C., chefs. What started with a goal of 80 participants now has thousands of professional and home bakers raising money for organizations that support Black lives. This summer, Paducah's National Quilt Museum will feature a new exhibit, "OURstory: Human Rights Stories in Fabric." Susanne Miller Jones, curator of the exhibit, speaks with Tracy Ross about the featured works and the civil rights movements throughout history they commemorate. The coronavirus pandemic reached a new one-day high Thursday with 150,000 new confirmed cases, according to the World Health Organization. Almost half of those cases were reported in the Americas, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press conference. "The world is in a new and dangerous phase," Tedros said. "Many people are understandably fed up with being at home. Countries are understandably eager to open up their societies and economies, but the virus is still spreading fast. It is still deadly, and most people are still susceptible." Many state and local governments have decided it isn't safe yet to hold in-person eviction hearings in court during the pandemic. But apparently it's OK for people to be put out on the street during the outbreak if you do it after a Zoom call. That's what's happening in some states as eviction moratoriums expire, and courts hold remote hearings for people who can't pay their rent. These Three Factors Are Driving Many COVID-19 Outbreaks In Rural Communities As the economies of the Ohio Valley gradually reopen from the pandemic closures, state officials are still reporting hundreds of coronavirus cases each day in the region. In Kentucky, coronavirus cases are again on the rise , with a week-long average of daily cases approaching the highest level yet. Public health officials are concerned about a spread of coronavirus into more rural parts of the region. Read MoreTAGS:WKMS
