Partnerships between modellers from these related disciplines, combined with interaction with epidemiologists and decision makers, will permit epidemic responses to be performed most effectively. A set of papers addressing the links between climate and ecosystem, and highlighting how nature-based solutions can help to maintain a diverse, resilient and well-functioning biosphere. This special issue highlights findings on how we reactivate memories and what this reactivation does. Reactivations after learning during rest (e.g. sleep) allow memories to be processed and consolidated, while reactivations during behaviour allow for flexible planning and decision making. Together, these diverse mechanisms lead to high-level cognitive abilities. Technology now allows us to catalogue the enormous diversity of microorganisms in samples. A new challenge is to interpret these data by placing them into larger conceptual frameworks. This theme issue aims to highlight new advances and potential opportunities to do that.
