The class wasn't forced upon them; they wanted to learn how to study the Bible for themselves. So, I agreed to share some of what I have learned about studying the Scriptures with them. I even threw in some clever (or at least I thought so) illustrations and examples that teenage minds could relate to, in an attempt to make the class fun and memorable. But to my surprise, after forty minutes they were actually worse off then when we began; all I had to show for my effort was a room full of frustrated and confused teenagers. The collective look of bewilderment on their faces was one of the scariest moments I've ever had as a youth pastor. However, the worst part of all was that I accomplished the exact opposite of what I had set out to do: instead of getting them excited about studying the Bible, they left feeling as though it was totally out of their reach. What a disaster! I quickly realized that the biggest mistakes I made were: 1) Trying to teach them a method of Bible study that was too complicated for them to grasp. 2) Presenting it to them as if it was the only way to study Scripture. I was determined to right this wrong, but first I needed to do a little research. So, I began to look for the perfect Bible study method - one that would open their young minds to the greatness of the Bible. A personal quest began to grow out of my utter failure. Every day I searched for new study methods that would unlock God's Word. I read over thirty books (many out of print) and visited countless websites looking for the best Bible study methods. None of the ones I found were perfect, but many of them had interesting points of view and seemed like they would be fun to try. So I did. That is when I began to realize that I was onto something more than I anticipated at the start. My search resulted in not one, but numerous inspiring and challenging Bible study methods suitable for any Christian, young or old, who desires to draw nearer to the Lord through studying His Word. In the end, I had compiled a list of forty different step-by-step Bible study methods. I tested each of them myself, improving upon some in order to make them a little more efficient and to the point. As I was doing the work, a desire to share my discoveries with others began growing in my heart. I wished that everyone could read the books and websites for themselves, but I knew that wasn't very realistic. So I did the next best thing. While some of the methods are very elementary and, in my view, occasionally too subjective, I believe that ANY person desiring a more rewarding Bible study experience--even very advanced students of The Word--will find several ideas in this book that will challenge and inspire! Remember, without a pen in hand, you are only reading, not studying.Read more One person found this helpful Helpful Forty Bible study methods in one book - a helpful overview.The example at the end of each of the methods illustrated well the method and made the explanation more vivid.I have the kindle edition - a few times it told me to look at page ### - sometimes it took some creativity to find the specific page since the Kindle version only has location numbers. For many years I thought that I needed only to learn from a Pastor but I was wrong. God's Word exhorts us to be noble Bereans and study the Scriptures for ourselves. Not just to take a man's word that a certain doctrine is correct. This book will help you to do just that. Pastor Deane has come up with 40 ways of studying the Bible, there is something for everyone. Last night I did the "Charting Verse by Verse" method and was highly edified by comparing Scripture with Scripture. I thank the author for providing us with this fantastic resource. By the way, after he describes step by step how to do each method, he has an example of each in his own handwriting. I think all youth Sunday school TEACHERS YOUTH PASTORS and YOUTH LEADERS and PASTORS SHOULD HAVE THIS BOOK. I may just buy this book for my sunday school teacher (which is my aunt). I also may get one for my pastor and maybe for the pastor that still preaches at churches if there pastor is gone he goes there and preaches for them plus this pastor has been there for me. He drove to Riley Hospital every other day for 2 weeks when I was in the Hospital with severe pain from my Neurofibromatosis type1. I did have to have a 4 cm tumor removed. With my tumors it's very rare for them to become cancerous. But this tumor did have cancer. I didn't take chemo but I was on a clinical trial to see if this med would shrink or stop my rumors from growing. It didn't do a thing besides make me sick because it did have chemo in it. Very good book. I have it on my kindle and a book. That's how much I love the book. For those who think the Bible is difficult to understand, I would recommend going through this book. You could start at any chapter to find a study way that you might find easier, then work your way to other study methods which will take you deeper into God's Word. It is the Holy Spirit who enables us to understand God's Word as He is our Teacher. If you find it difficult, ask Him to open your eyes to see His truths and how they apply to you and your life.
