Special thanks to all our funders, supporters, and friends for your continued dedication and assistance in helping Hoop Dreams Empower the Pursuit of Dreams. Check out our highlights from our 10th Anniversary Gala in 2007. Thank you to the team at Gearshift Productions for their fantastic editing and video production! Unlike traditional mentorship, ourEmpowerment Program benefits both student and adult. During the beginning of each school year we pair about 80 teenagers with college-educated mentors. These adults help guide them through the sometimes overwhelming college application process. Adonal Foyle of the Golden State Warriors, Susie Kay and Lawrence Moten of the Maryland Nighthawks at the 11th Annual Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament and Community Festival The work HDSF does with our students does not end after they graduate from high school. We continue to remain a presence in the lives of our students as they enter college, the workforce and beyond. Special video produced by Don Napolean and Jim Folliard of GEARSHIFT for HDSF's 10th year anniversary gala in Feb, 2007. Special thanks to Jim and Don at GearShift. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After two decades and millions of hours by thousands of people that impacted the lives of over one thousand DC high school students, the story needed to be told. Thank you for helping to turn a dream into a reality On behalf of The Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund I would like to thank you for helping to make our closing gathering a special affair. Together we celebrated the legacy of Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund through the closing ceremony We Dared to Dream, which was held at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. on Thursday, October 1, 2009. The night was made special because of your generosity. While we're saddened, and disappointed, to end this great organization, we're also determined to ensure that the spirit of Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund lives on. Please click here for a special musical video in celebration of Hoop Dreams that was produced by HDSF supporter and friend Cyrus Zolghadri. And please click here for a special tribute to Hoop Dreams that was produced by Gearshift. Hoop Dreams was built on a vision of uniting and strengthening our community while building bridges of understanding between diverse individuals across the Washington Metropolitan area. We remain deeply inspired by the students and volunteers we were fortunate to work with. Because of your tremendous support throughout the years we were able to help 1,000 Washington, D.C. high school students through a combination of mentoring, professional internships, SAT preparation and college scholarships. Your participation in Hoop Dreams is living proof that you care deeply about supporting the dreams of inner-city D.C. public high school students to achieve their goals of earning a college education, a successful career, and a brighter future. Through your kindness and commitment we were able to assist local students, who are determined to make it into college! Your support of our organization has truly helped us change the lives of hundreds of students in the District of Columbia and thousands of volunteers who made this dream a reality. We are very pleased that two outstanding organizations have been named to be the recipients of the assets of Hoop Dreams, and have agreed, in their own unique way, to continue the legacy of Hoop Dreams by establishing funds within their respective organizations. DC College Access Program (DC-CAP) will continue granting scholarships into the future through the Hoop Dreams Legacy Fund. They will also administer the remaining scholarships, which were originally awarded by Hoop Dreams. United Negro College Fund (UNCF) will establish the Susie Kay Legacy Fund to provide for academic and career support for the very same population that Hoop Dreams served from 1996 to 2009. If you would like to contribute to either of these two legacy funds please send a check, made payable to Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund, to 800 K Street, NW, Suite 1100 South, Washington, D.C. 20001 until Nov 1, 2009. After that date please check our website for information on how to send donations directly to UNCF or DC CAP. Please indicate in the memo field to which legacy fund you'd like your donation applied. Again, many thanks! Warmest regards, Susie Kay Founder President ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Real dreams. Dreams of a better education, an enriched life, and a stronger community. Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund (HDSF) recognized a need to ensure students, who have worked hard amidst social, economic, and racial disparities, get the opportunity to excel in college and in the workforce. Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund works to create relationships, build networks and provide resources that: empower and support underserved DC public high school students and HDSF alumni to find their best pathways to post-secondary education, a career and an enriched life; build bridges of understanding and collaboration between diverse communities in the metropolitan Washington DC region; and promote an on-going commitment to community responsibility and a lasting spirit among students, volunteers, supporters, and all involved. Since 1996, HDSF has helped nearly 1,000 students to college through the combination of our year-long college career prep programs and the awarding of over 1,805 new and renewal academic college scholarships. HDSF works to empower DC public high school youth, so they can find their best pathways to college, career, and life success. Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund offers students a unique opportunity to develop relationships with local professionals, receive academic scholarships, build networks, and access resources that will help enrich lives. Most of these students are the first in their family to attend college and come from very challenging social and economic circumstances. But more than getting kids into college - HDSF prepares students for life. Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund is about Building Bridges of Success while Empowering the Pursuit of Dreams. Senator John Kerry at the 8th Annual Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund Congressional Reception on May 11th in The United States Capitol Building. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our dear friend Ebong and his new line!. And thank you for supporting the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund. The HDSF Board of Directors on June 22, 2009 made a very responsible decision to adopt a resolution to dissolve our organization.
