Thank you for your understanding at this time and we look forward to reopening next spring.Plan your visitBehind the scenes at Spencer HouseEvery year, all the carpets in Spencer House are rotated 180 degrees to even out the areas that receive the most wear. This can be particularly challenging when the carpet is as large as that in the Great Room! This magnificent Turkish carpet is over ten metres long by five metres wide. It replicates a 17th century Mughal design but was specially made in the 1990s to fit the Great Room’s impressive dimensions. Once the carpet has been turned, the trickiest part of the process is teasing out all of the creases and bumps until the vast expanse of carpet lies flat.We look forward to welcoming you back to Spencer House soon.
