Description:The Florida Natural Areas Inventory is Florida's Natural Heritage Program and state member of the NatureServe network. We are housed within the Florida Resources and Environmental Analysis Center at Florida State University. We manage a database of current information on Florida's rarest species, maintain an inventory of the state's conservation land holdings, and conduct ecological surveys and analyses to support conservation planning and land management. Our program is entirely supported by projects developed in cooperation with agency partners. FNAI monitors the structure and composition of vegetation on FWC wildlife management areas to guide land management, particularly the application of prescribed fire. Find out more about this program here! Analysis of storm impacts Following Hurricane Michael, FNAI worked with the Florida Park Service and the US Airforce to analyze the impacts of the storm, and subsequent recovery work, on natural resources under their management. Habitat characterization FNAI is studying the relationship between dune vegetation characteristics and St. Andrew Beach Mouse occupancy levels on Tyndall Air Force Base and St. Joseph Peninsula. Informing land management FNAI collects data describing Reference Natural Communities, natural areas determined to be in exemplary condition. These examples are used as models for the management of Florida’s conservation lands. Florida Map of Biodiversity Importance The Florida Natural Areas Inventory (FNAI), in partnership with the U.S.-based nonprofit NatureServe, is excited to unveil the Florida Map of Biodiversity Importance. Interactive Conservation Lands Map FNAI has completed a major update to our Florida Conservation Lands web map viewer. The new version allows users to search and view Florida Conservation Lands, Florida Forever Board of Trustees land acquisition projects, Florida Forever acquisitions, and conservation easements on private lands all in a single map. Florida Forever The nation's largest environmental land acquisition program. Longleaf Pine Ecosystem Geodatabase FNAI is working with partners to develop a spatial database that will serve as the central repository for data on the occurrence and ecological condition of longleaf pine ecosystems across the southeast.. Florida Biodiversity Matrix The Biodiversity Matrix is a screening tool that provides immediate, free access to rare species occurrence information statewide. Tips for Distinguishing Native from Invasive Species Download this pdf file from FNAI biologists, based on our training presentation at invasive plant workshops held in February and March 2017. The Mission of the Florida Natural Areas Inventory is to collect, interpret, and disseminate ecological information critical to the conservation of Florida's biological diversity. FNAI's database and expertise facilitate environmentally sound planning and natural resource management to protect the plants, animals, and communities that represent Florida's natural heritage.
