Wilkes County was the first county in Georgia formed under the Georgia Constitution of 1777. It was named for British Parliamentarian and American Independence supporter John Wilkes. In 1780, the county seat, Washington, was incorporated and became not only the first chartered town named for George Washington, but also the first city chartered under the new State of Georgia. History was made here during the American Revolution at the Battle of Kettle Creek, fought in Wilkes County on February 14, 1779. This battle was responsible for driving the British out of northeast Georgia. Only eighty-six years later, during the War Between the States, history was again made here when Washington-Wilkes played host to the last cabinet meeting of the Confederacy in 1865, attended by Confederate President Jefferson Davis. It was also the last time that the infamous Confederate gold was tracked... and never found.Today our three historic house museums and other historic sites share these stories and other tales of this small city with a big history, one filled with legendary feats, prominent families, and innovative discoveries.
