The marker stained in brown is mesothelin, a protein that is highly expressed in mesothelioma, but not in most normal adult tissues. Jiang et al. showed that mouse models and patients with mesothelioma become more sensitive to immune checkpoint blockade after treatment with an immunotoxin targeting mesothelin, resulting in greatly improved therapeutic outcomes.
