In light of the restrictions put in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic, students attending year-round schools (Anne Chesnutt Middle, E.E. Miller Elementary and Reid Ross Classical) will begin the 2020-2021 school year remotely. The first day of school for Cumberland County Schools’ (CCS) year-round students will be July 9.The Cumberland County Board of Education approved revised calendars at its June 9 meeting. The start dates have been determined; however, the format of instruction for the following school calendars has not been finalized:Early College High Schools: August 3Cumberland Polytechnic High School: August 12Traditional Schools and A.B. Wilkins High School: August 17The district is reviewing and considering multiple options for schools based on guidance received from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).To assist with planning for the fall, the district has launched a parent survey to gather input and feedback about remote learning: https://forms.gle/PAiVkBFa7udx2i1Z7. Parents and guardians are encouraged to complete one survey per household.“As we continue to monitor and follow COVID-19 guidance, we are exploring multiple scenarios and options for school in the fall,” said CCS Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr. “Our final decision will be guided by directions from the Governor, along with state and local health officials. In support of our commitment to continuous improvement and increased literacy, we will continue to require a summer reading assignment for all students who will attend Seventy First Classical for the 2020-2021 school year. We will not require a physical project.Students are expected to read a book and to maintain a reading log which must be signed by parents. This reading log will be due at a date to be determined in August, after the start of school, and will count as a grade in your English Language Arts class. A completed log will receive a grade of 100. Incomplete logs will receive no credit.*Since we will not be able to check books out to students over the summer this year, there are suggested titles, but students may read any book of their choice, fiction or nonfiction, so long as it is subject and age appropriate and approved by the parent. No picture books, audio books, graphic novels, Manga, or comic books are allowed for this assignment.
