Description:

Weather forecast for the next 24 hours Westerly og variable wind 3-10 m/s. Partly cloudy but mostly dry in the east and west regions, else widely fair. Increasing southeasterly winds in the west tonight and tomorrow, 8-15 m/s in the afternoon, but considerably stronger wind in northern Snæfellsnes. Slower southerly wind in the east part. Fair in the north and east regions, else intermittently cloudy and starting to rain late tomorrow night. Temperature 3 to 9 deg. C. Forecast made 12.10.2020 15:02 Forecaster's remarks Tomorrow, near gale-force winds are forecast in the northern part of Snæfellsnes. A yellow warning has been issued. From tuesday noon until thrusday morning, windy conditions may pose hazard to vehicles susceptible to wind in West- and Southwest-Iceland. Prepared by the meteorologist on duty 12.10.2020 15:02 Around 570 earthquakes were detected by the IMO¿s SIL-system this week, considerably less than the week before when around 1000 earthquakes were detected. The largest earthquake was of magnitude M2.8 on September 30th in Reykjanes ridge. No large swarms took place, but there was widely considerable seismic activity.Around 10 earthquakes were detected in Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, two in Öræfajökull glacier and around 10 in Grímsvötn. One earthquake was detected in Hekla. More Avalanche bulletins for selected areas The avalanche bulletin is at a regional scale. It does not necessarily represent avalanche danger in urban areas. The Icelandic Met Office haschanged the aviation color code for Grímsvötn volcano from green to yellow. Volcanicactivity at Grímsvötn has been gradually increasing over time as indicated byseveral regularly monitored geophysical and geochemical parameters that are nowabove the known background level. Since the intense seismic swarm started in Fagradalsfjall onthe 18th of July, the activity has been slowly decreasing over time. The acquisition of recent satellite images enabled mappingof new surface deformation in the area associated with the sequence of largeearthquakes which occurred between the 18th and 20th of July. The satellitedata processing clearly shows a deformation signal corresponding toapproximately 3 centimeters of movement along a NE-SW oriented fault in theregion of Fagradalsfjall. On 19th July at approximately01:30 a.m. a seismic swarm commenced in Fagradalsfjall. Over 1700 earthquakeshave occurred in this region since. The largest event occurred at23:36 yesterday evening with a magnitude (M) of 5. Two other events greaterthan M4 occurred early this morning at 05:46 (M4.6) and 06:23 (M4.3),respectively. In addition, 22 earthquakes greater than M3 have occurred sincemidnight. Felt earthquakes have been reported by local residents as far Akranesin the west and Vík in the east. The seismic swarm is still ongoing withsimilar intensity.earthquake swarm started on 19th of June offshore North Iceland, NE ofSiglufjörður. Three earthquakes above M5.0 have occurred since the swarmstarted. On 20th of June a M5.4 earthquake occurred at 15:05 and a M5.6 at19:26. Both these earthquakes were located around 20 km NE of Siglufjörður. Thelargest earthquake of the swarm occurred on 21st of June at 19:07 and was M5.8. The meeting reviewed activity in Grímsvötn in thepast months and discussed measurements made in and around Grímsvötn in earlyJune. While seismic activity has been increasing over the past year, in June itwas still lower than in the months leading up to the most recent eruptions in2004 and 2011. Measurements of land deformation show that land continues torise since the previous eruption with no significant changes in the last year. Thebiggest measurable change was that sulfur dioxide (SO2) was detectedclose to the last eruption site. SO2 emissions give a strongindication of magma degassing.its active period, as it is since the eruption in 1996, Grímsvötn erupts onaverage each 5-10 years. The last eruption occurred in 2011 and it was a fairlylarge and powerful event. Between eruptions, the deformation data indicate thegradual accumulation of new magma at depth and the increased pressure in thesystem. In the last weeks scientists from the IMO measured SO2 inthe southwest corner of the caldera in Grímsvötn, close to where the lasteruptions in 2004 and 2011 took place. Evaluation of the history of climate in Iceland since the settlement has been ongoing for more than two hundred years. Hannes Finnsson, the bishop of Skálholt wrote the first scientific treatise on the subject in 1796 (Finnsson, 1796).
