If you don’t go out in the woods nothing will ever happen and your life will never begin.”And that is just what we will do on our 3-month journey through 6 fairy tales. Every two weeks we will dive into a new fairy tale -- each one of an intrepid girl who enters the forest (initiation), responds to a challenge (integration), and comes out transformed (individuation). We will become the little girl who ventures into the unknown, ready to discover what we need to know about ourselves and the world, the light and the shadow, the big bad wolf and the fairy godmother, the handsome prince and the wicked witch. Is it possible they are all parts of the Self that we must encounter, grapple with, and integrate to leave the forest a fully-formed human being?Fairy tales have long been told as cautionary tales with morals and motives disguised as metaphor. Initially, they were stories for adults to both entertain and educate one another about the vicissitudes of life. They were told around the fire, the table, in the parlour, and eventually to children in their beds--the little ones had to have overheard these tales and implored their elders for more.Many fairy tales have their genesis in ancient myths or folk tales that were passed down from generation to generation, over centuries, across borders. These stories have been told and retold around the world so that there is much cross-cultural overlap from one country to another. We will explore some of these origins as well as the archetypes that live in the world of fairy tales, such as the orphan, the divine child, the innocent, the witch, the predator, the princess and prince, queen and king, the castle, the forest, the path, the gift, and more.Every two weeks, beginning July 10th, we will immerse ourselves in a fairy tale I have chosen for us. You will receive an illustrated pdf with a link to the fairy tale that explores its symbolism, origins, and archetypes. You are invited to read the story and make SoulCollage® cards of the archetypes and themes as you feel inspired. Those familiar with SoulCollage® will see that some cards will fit into their Council suit (archetypes), while others will find a home in the Committee suit (inner parts), while some may join their Companion suit (animal guides and allies).You will be able to share your cards and wisdom in a secret Facebook group of sister SoulCollagers if you like.Each of the 6 fairy tales selected for this course will feature the motif of the little girl venturing “Into the Woods,” the heroine’s journey of answering the call--going into the dark forest where enchanted beings such as tricksters, dwarfs, witches, ogres, talking animals, and other magical creatures live.We will get in touch with our inner child--the innocent, who faces adversity, learns what skills she must, discovers who her guides and helpers are, has her mettle tested, gains wisdom, and comes out changed--all necessary steps on the path of individuation.Carl Jung coined the term, individuation, a lifelong process by which the unconscious is made conscious, the psyche is integrated, and transformation and enlightenment are achieved. Jung was careful to say the individuation process is not for everyone. It is, however, an exciting journey for those seekers who want to know more about themselves and who are willing to explore the depths of their soul. The rewards are many: self-discovery, self-awareness, and integration of the many selves, including the shadow--that which is hard to see, much less own. Every two weeks you will be provided with the fairy tale to read as well as an illustrated pdf of the course so we can get to know the history, themes, characters, archetypes, and symbols of each story, using a Jungian approach to interpret the deeper meaning of these wonder tales and how they apply to us. We can create art journal pages or SoulCollage® cards for each fairy tale as we feel moved.
