AfrikaBurn: The event

In 1986, some dude called Larry and his mate Jerry set fire to a wooden figure on a beach in San Francisco Many years later, here we are in South Africa with AfrikaBurn, one of the largest regional Burning Man events outside of the USA.

AfrikaBurn takes place at Quaggafontein in the Tankwa Karoo, which is located in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The event is a blank canvas on which participants project any creative endeavour that they desire to create, ranging from large-scale burning sculptures to small performances, and any kind of service that participants see fit to give or “gift” to the community. The spectacular result is the manifestation of a weeklong interdisciplinary cultural event that includes art, costume, performance, theme camps, music, mutant vehicles and so much more.

AfrikaBurn’s aim is to invent the world anew and gift its participants a space for creative expression, play, and be radically inclusive and accessible. The touchstone of value in our culture will always be immediacy: experience before theory, moral relationships before politics, survival before services, roles before jobs, ritual before symbolism, work before vested interest, participant support before sponsorship.

Mayday Tickets are charged at a premium above the general AfrikaBurn ticket price. For those that have the ability to access AfrikaBurn tickets early, a generous donation is included that allows AfrikaBurn to facilitate the community who actualize the amazing creative projects you see at AfrikaBurn, whilst still making tickets available to others who have less means, to also be able to attend AfrikaBurn.

The difference between the regular ticket price (R2199) and the Mayday Ticket price (R3999) is a direct donation of R1800 to AfrikaBurn. This ticket type is for those who want to support AfrikaBurn throughout the year as well as secure a ticket as soon as possible which may help those who need to make travel arrangements well in advance.

Limited COVID-19 refund policy:
Should AfrikaBurn have to cancel the event due to COVID-19 restrictions, Mayday Ticket holders will only be refunded the percentage amount as relates to the General Sale Ticket price (R2199), and not the Mayday Ticket price. For example, if you buy a Mayday Ticket for R3999 you will receive a R2090 (95% of R2199) refund should AfrikaBurn get cancelled before the end of 2021 (minus any transaction fees).

Similarly to the Mayday Ticket, as AfrikaBurn has grown beyond the annual event, and in line with our mission to reinvent the world anew, a New Horizons Ticket lets you into the event and make a donation in support of our year-round programme of arts, social development initiatives, and new projects that are designed to facilitate the growth of our community and enable sustainable systems to be developed for our new home on Quaggafontein Farm. This is the ticket to choose if you’re unable to afford the Mayday Ticket, but still want to support the organisation beyond the event.

Whilst this ticket type does not come with any additional benefits to you as a ticket holder, you are guaranteed a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that your contribution will be enabling our organisation and our community to look toward New Horizons.

Direct Distribution Number of tickets available: 800Cost: R2199/128 / $149

Allocations begin: 1 October 2021 12:00 pm SAST

As a city built on the contributions and efforts of a wide range of creative collectives, its crucial that longstanding (and new) contributors are acknowledged and stand a fair chance of being able to access tickets and this is why we have the Direct Distribution Tickets (DDTs) in place.

Direct Distribution Tickets are awarded to crew leads who register creative projects so that they dont run the risk of missing out on tickets in the General Sale, which may very well sell out quickly on account of the low number of tickets going on sale.

This ticket type is also allocated to deeply involved volunteers who perform significant tasks for the organisation through the course of the year.

Limited COVID-19 refund policy:
Should AfrikaBurn have to cancel the event due to COVID-19, DDT holders will be refunded according to the following sliding scale:

Cancellation before 1 January 2022 = 95% of General Sales Ticket price

Sales end: 15 November 2021 4:00 pm SAST (or sold out)

This cost-price ticket is priced at the amount that it costs to have you on site in Tankwa Town. This is the ticket to choose if you are not in a position to buy the combined ticket + donation New Horizons or Mayday Ticket type.

General Sales Tickets are sold online on a first come first served basis, with a maximum of two tickets per purchaser.

In previous years, General Sales Tickets usually sell out within a few weeks. However with AfrikaBurn 2022 being much smaller than 2019 we do expect General Sales Tickets to sell out within hours. If you are determined to attend AfrikaBurn in 2022 then please consider buying the Mayday or New Horizons Ticket option or joining an art crew for Direct Distribution Tickets.

The deadline to purchase Direct Distribution Tickets is Friday 5th November, any unsold tickets from the Mayday and New Horizons allocations will be placed in the General Sales pot. Again, this is unlikely due to the reduced event numbers for 2022.

Coupled with an opportunity to apply for an Access Grant (welfare and/or transport), Anathi Tickets are means-tested and require submission of a bank statement, payslip or affidavit for each person applying. Because they’re awarded to individuals on a case by case basis, Anathi Tickets cannot be transferred, or sold.

PLEASE NOTE: Tickets for the 2022 event will be offered in the first instance to applicants of the 2020 event, including those who are part of creative crews. The guiding principles of AfrikaBurn:

AfrikaBurn is a Burning Man regional event, and our guiding principles are based on the Ten Principles of Burning Man, to which we have added an 11th, in 2011 – Each One Teach One – that encourages the sharing of knowledge.

These principles aren’t commandments, and they’re not rules – they’re ideals that offer guidelines to how we as a community can reinvent the world, and ourselves. In fact, we re-invented the principle of Radical Inclusion to be more representative in the South African context.

Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey wrote the Ten Principles as guidelines for the newly-formed Regional Network, in 2004. They were crafted not as a dictate of how people should be and act, but as a reflection of the community’s ethos and culture as it had organically developed since the event’s inception.

Radical InclusionEveryone should be able to be a part of AfrikaBurn. As an intentional community, committed to inventing the world anew, we actively pursue mechanisms to address imbalances and overcome barriers to participation, especially in light of past, current and systemic injustice.

We welcome and respect the stranger. Anyone can belong.Learn MoreDecommodificationIn order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.Learn MoreGiftingWe are devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.Learn MoreImmediacyImmediate experience is, in many ways, the most important value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.Learn MoreRadical Self-expressionRadical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.Learn MoreRadical Self-reliance AfrikaBurn encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.Learn MoreCivic ResponsibilityWe value civil society. Community members who organise events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavour to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with national and local laws.Learn MoreCommunal EffortOur community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.Learn MoreLeaving No TraceOur community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavour, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.Learn MoreParticipationOur community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.Learn MoreEach One Teach OneAs a self-reliant community, we believe the responsibility of spreading our culture lies with each and every one of us. All of us are custodians of our culture – when the opportunity presents itself, we pass knowledge on.Learn More Previous Next

Refunds:

Due to the hard work and year round costs it takes to make AfrikaBurn happen, AfrikaBurn have always had a no refund policy on tickets. However this year, in the event of a cancellation due to a Government imposed COVID-19 lock down (that potentially bans gatherings or limits numbers allowed to gather outdoors), much the same as events both locally and abroad, AfrikaBurn is offering a sliding scale COVID-19 only refund.

How it works

Please note that for both Mayday and New Horizons Ticket types, the partial COVID-19 refund only applies to the General Sales portion of your event ticket and not any donation that may be included in the ticket price. For example, if you buy a Mayday Ticket for R3999 then you will receive a R2090 (95% of the General Sales Ticket price of R2199) refund should AfrikaBurn get cancelled before the end of the year (minus any transaction fees). If you buy a New Horizons or General Sales Ticket the same sliding scale percentages would apply.

The sliding refund scale also applies to other AfrikaBurn ticket types, but in direct proportion to their cost. For example, a Kids Ticket at R499 would get a 75% refund if AfrikaBurn is cancelled on the 30th January 2022 equalling a R374 refund (minus any transaction fees).

Limited COVID-19 refund policy:

Cancellation before 1 January 2022 = 95% of General Sales Ticket price or equivalent percentage of a Subsidised or Kids Ticket

Cancellation before 1 February 2022 = 75% of General Sales Ticket price or equivalent percentage of a Subsidised or Kids Ticket

Cancellation before 1 March 2022 = 25% of General Sales Ticket price or equivalent percentage of a Subsidised or Kids Ticket

Cancellation after 1 March 2022 = No refund

COVID-19 Refund Policy

By purchasing this ticket, you agree to AfrikaBurn’s limited refund policy.

A ticket purchased to attend and participate at AfrikaBurn is non-refundable:

if the event is terminated or cancelled due to harsh weather, acts of nature, government directions and/or regulations, or as a result of any other circumstance, including circumstances that are beyond AfrikaBurn’s control (force majeure). if you are unable to attend and participate at AfrikaBurn for any reason whatsoever, including but not limited to any reason related to COVID-19.

Notwithstanding the above, AfrikaBurn will provide a partial refund if AfrikaBurn is cancelled due to government directions and/or regulations promulgated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If AfrikaBurn is cancelled as a result of government directions and/or regulations promulgated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the following partial refunds will apply in respect of the General Sale portion of the purchase price paid for the ticket:

cancellation prior to 1 January 2022 95% refund less administration charges cancellation prior to 1 February 2022 75% refund less administration charges cancellation prior to 1 March 2022 25% refund less administration charges cancellation after 1 March: no refund

The ticket is a revocable license to attend AfrikaBurn that may be revoked by AfrikaBurn for any reason, at any time. A revoked licence will not result in any refund whatsoever.

We acknowledge that the ticket price constitutes only a portion of the total costs in attending AfrikaBurn. As such, we recommend that you consider taking out personal insurance suited to your needs. This is particularly important for those travelling from overseas to attend AfrikaBurn.

It is your prerogative to obtain your own insurance cover to protect yourself in the event that you are unable to attend AfrikaBurn.

We do not recommend and therefore do not offer an opt-in insurance policy at point of sale.

If you choose to opt out of protection you can still re-sell your tickets through our official reselling channels when they open. Due to the limited number of tickets available to the event, the uptake of tickets being resold should be good.

NB: Quicket and AfrikaBurn are no longer providing a means to insure your ticket with a third party on an individual basis due to the frustration experienced by the community for the last ticket sales. We invoke the principle of Radical Self-reliance, and suggest you arrange your own insurer, and a policy that suits your unique situation.
AfrikaBurn is not in a position to refund you if you are unable to attend the event due to contracting or complications arising as a result of COVID-19 in your personal capacity (e.g. being in contact with someone who tested positive requiring you to isolate).

AfrikaBurn 2022 COVID-19 entry policy:

Although the AfrikaBurn COVID-19 plan is evolving, we’re committed to protecting our community, and upholding our duty of Civic Responsibility. The following information is based on our understanding of the situation and guidance from government, and is subject to change.

South African government policy may require you to present a negative COVID-19 test within the past 48hrs to gain access to AfrikaBurn. Not having this, and/or testing positive for COVID-19 or coming into close contact with someone who has COVID-19 could prevent you from entering AfrikaBurn and you’ll then have to make plans for a safe space to isolate and/or recover.

This protocol is evolving, and will be added to the Quaggapedia when all inputs are received and finalised. By purchasing a ticket, you agree to keep yourself and your camp mates up to date with regard to its implications, impacts and your required actions.

Frequently asked questions: Ticketing and Gate Questions Direct Distribution Ticket Questions Tribe Information International Participants Questions General Questions Ticketing and Gate Questions

What about my 2020 ticket that I couldnt use?

We’d like to thank you once again for your patience with the lengthy, complex and frustrating process that ensued following the cancellation of the 2020 AfrikaBurn event, with regard to the insurance claim for tickets.

You already know all the gory details about AfrikaBurn, supported by our ticketing partner, taking a case to the Financial Ombudsman in the UK (being where the event insurance policy was held). A UK Supreme Court ruling in January triggered the Ombudsman to review cases that might be impacted. But much like renewing a passport, we’ve been told we’re in the queue, we were assigned an investigator, but still have no concrete further information where, what and when.

Any refunds as a result of the legal processes with the UK Ombudsman and our insurers, would supersede any other offers of a discount or coupon. Yet again, we thank you in advance for your continued understanding while this gets finalised.

You will have also received a direct email about this.

How do I get a ticket?

To buy a ticket, it’s as simple as clicking the large orange button on the top of the page here.

Alternatively, you can register a Burner Bio (over here) and click the green ‘Tickets’ button.
You can purchase up to two tickets, however it will make life easier if you insert the second person’s details at the purchase point. Please be prepared with the details of the second ticket holder, as you will need to insert these before concluding your purchase.

The details youll need on hand during ticket sales are:
Name Surname, email address, cell number, ID/Passport number, emergency contact details of someone not at AfrikaBurn as well as the name of any camp or creative project they may be affiliated to.

PLEASE NOTE: the ID/passport number that you enter on Quicket must match the ID/passport number that you present at the Gate. No exceptions.

Do I need a Burner Bio to purchase a ticket?

Although we normally require a Burner Bio profile to purchase a ticket or attend the event, due to reduced capacity and resources, Burner Bios are not compulsory for the 2022 event tickets.

That said, they’re still required if you want to apply for any grants or register any projects. They’re also handy to use to communicate with your team, and to access community portals such as theJoin a Project Page.

How do I edit the details on my ticket?

If you find that the details on your ticket do not match the details on the ticket holder’s ID/passport, or your circumstances have changed (e.g. your partner is no longer coming to the Burn, but your daughter is) then you can edit the details on the ticket.

Please note: You have ONE CHANCE to edit the details on this ticket so make sure you insert the correct details, as you can’t go back and change it again.

Log into Quicket, and click on your username (at upper right)

Locate and click on “My Tickets”

Find your AfrikaBurn 2022 ticket

Alongside Options, click “Edit Details”

Change the details of the ticket, and click “Save”

Please ensure that the details on the ticket match the details of the person presenting that ticket at the event Gate.

How do I transfer a ticket to a friend?

Transferring a ticket can happen any time right up until the last day the gates to the Burn are open. Here’s how:

Log into Quicket, and click ‘My Tickets’ under your username in the upper right hand corner.

Click “My Tickets” on the left hand side of the page

Find your AfrikaBurn 2022 ticket

Alongside Options, click “Transfer Tickets”

Use the option to transfer the ticket to a new recipient

Once you transfer your ticket to the new owner, the barcode will be cancelled and a new barcode will be issued to the new recipient. Please ensure that you enter the correct email address (both times) as the transfer cannot be reversed.

If you’re purchasing a ticket from a friend, let them know to transfer the ticket to you, as above.

How do ticket resales work?

This year, Quicket has enabled a re-sale system to support our community selling or buying tickets outside of the main sales. Their system is tied directly into the usual event page, and will open directly after sales close or we sell out.

If you’re looking to re-sell your ticket, please check out this help document.

Alternatively if you’re looking for a re-sale ticket to purchase, please visit the AfrikaBurn event page on Quicket, and head on over to the tickets section where you’ll find whats available for re-sale.

Why cant I buy as many tickets as I like?

With the limited number of tickets available to the 2022 event, AfrikaBurn is limiting the amount of tickets you are able to purchase to two per purchaser. This is to ensure that everyone has equal opportunity to access a ticket, as well as ensuring that as many people register, answer the acculturation questions and provide accurate details (as they will be used in the AfrikaBurn Operations Centre while at the event).

How can I make a group booking?

Its not possible to make group bookings or book advance tickets for AfrikaBurn. Tickets go on sale each year starting around September, are limited to 2 per person, and sell out quickly. This also applies to large groups coming from outside South Africa.

Its important to note that no companies or individuals are able to promote or sell package tours to the event, or set up run camps for others. AfrikaBurn is completely unlike commercial events, where a catered or packaged experience is often available.

AfrikaBurn is informed by a set of 11 principles, among which are concepts like Participation, Radical Self Reliance and Decommodification. These mean that everyone who comes to the event is expected to erect their own camps and contribute to the event in some way. Its not a space where somebody else does the work: the community creates the event. In line with that, no paid labour is permitted on site at the event to set up camps, clean them, cook in them and so on.

For info on how our event works, and also as a way to understand how camping works or to understand how the many other aspects of AfrikaBurn are different, take a look at our Preparation page, and also our Survival Guide.

Theres loads of space in the desert why limit the numbers in 2022?

In order to find a safe midpoint between a large event and a safe environment for our community, we’re limiting numbers for 2022. It’s in response to government regulations which relate to COVID-19 protocols, our civic responsibility and our capabilities as a community to manage a large-scale event at this time.

If AfrikaBurn is a gift, then why do we have to buy tickets?

To make an event of this size happen, there are many costs to cover – many of which are ‘invisible’ in the sense of not being immediately apparent. Among these are site upkeep and development, insurance, emergency services, art funding, security, printed programs, survival guides, toilet construction (and rental), signage, transport, street lighting, equipment hire purchase, site office, tents and many, many more – too many to list here. For a useful price comparison, consider that camping at a national park costs around R200 per person per night, for which you get toilets and a piece of ground to pitch your tent.

Whats a Vehicle Pass?

Vehicle Passes are designed to encourage ride-sharing, reduce the number of cars on our event site and on the R355 – the tyre eating and treacherous road to AfrikaBurn. One Vehicle Pass is required per motorised vehicle entering the event. Mutant Vehicles (on trailers), caravans being pulled by a vehicle, and trailers do not require a Vehicle Pass – but motorcycles motorhomes do.

If you are part of a Collective with a registered creative project, you will be able to request a limited number of free Vehicles Passes that you can distribute amongst your Collective. If you are the creative lead on a project, please ensure that you inform your crew of these free passes as AfrikaBurn cannot refund Vehicle Passes bought erroneously.

Why does it say that my promotional code is used?

If you get this error message it could be because the purchase process was interrupted. If this is the problem, just wait 15 minutes, and try again – this is in place to prevent fraud.

If you still don’t come right, please call Quicket at: 021 424 9308 and they will happily help you.

What do I need for check-in at the Gate?

The gate crew will be checking photo ID against your ticket details in the system. ID/Passport or Drivers’ Licenses will be accepted, so please ensure that your ID/Passport number is correct on the ticket of every person who’s travelling with you.

The vehicle you are traveling in will need a vehicle pass too, these passes will be available to purchase online (or at the gate) right up until the event gates close.

For the Best Gate Experience™ – come prepared! Print your ticket out, or make sure your smart device has enough battery! Gate can be pretty unforgiving especially when there’s hundreds of other, better prepared folk clamouring to get in. Again, make sure the details on your ID/Passport match the details on your ticket. If they don’t, please check the edit details transfer ticket information above.

What about Kids Tickets?

Tickets for kids are unlimited and are available to kids 14 yrs and younger. These tickets can only be bought by parents/guardians over the age of 28 who are only able to bring a maximum of 4 minors and kids to the Burn. This is to ensure that there is enough adult supervision onsite.

If you’re planning to bring your children to the event, please think very seriously about it – taking kids to what is essentially an adult playground is a very serious responsibility.

Please note: kids over 15 need to buy a Minor Ticket which is priced at the General Sales Ticket price.

Can I apply for a Subsidised Ticket?

Subsidised Tickets are designed to make our event accessible to those who can’t afford the full ticket price but can afford a reduced-price ticket, subsidised by the community. Generally this includes people like students, single parents, folk on a low income, and others who really can’t afford to attend on their own steam, but should be able to participate.

If you feel you match that description, you can motivate for a Subsidised Ticket. Applications will open on 1 of Oct 2021, and will be open until 15 Nov 2021 or the limit of 300 successful applicants is reached.

Please check back here for the Subsidised Ticket application form.

Can I apply for an Anathi Ticket or Access Grant?

We would love everyone to have an opportunity to participate in AfrikaBurn.

Given that we are planning on a radical reduction of participants in 2022 (compared to previous years), our allocation of Anathi Tickets is half what it usually is, as the more expensive tickets subsidise the participation of those coming on discounted tickets.

The protocol for the 2022 event is to offer:

In the first round: Anathi Tickets to those associated with creative grant crews.
In the second round: to the previous ‘would be’ participants of 2020Any remaining Anathi will be on offer from February 2022.

If you feel you (and your team if you have one), would qualify for Anathi tickets or an access grant, you can mail the Anathi team.

Firstly, you should check out our ticket page under the Anathi section here.

Then once you’ve read that info, contact [emailprotected] to put yourself on a list for 2022.

Can I purchase tickets at an outlet?

AfrikaBurn no longer sells physical tickets at outlets as this increases the risk of scalping, which will only cause issues for you (and us) at the gate. Tickets to AfrikaBurn are only available online, from our ticket provider Quicket.

Click the link at the top of the homepage to purchase.

Why am I getting 3D Secure errors?

If you are struggling with 3D secure and your payment fails, you’ll be taken back to the checkout page.

To avoid issues, from here, select the ‘Bank Transfer’ payment option, and c thelick ‘Complete Purchase’ button at the bottom of the page. Your ticket/s will then be booked for 72 hours and alternative payment instructions will be shown to you.

Tickets are all sold out! How do I get one now?

Either you need to wait for the next round of sales to happen (if there is one), or you need to take advantage of the Quicket re-sale program. You can also opt to make a private purchase, but we don’t recommend this process.

Do I get a free ticket if I volunteer, make an artwork/car/theme camp?

No. Everyone that comes to AfrikaBurn makes AfrikaBurn happen – no one gets a freebie.

I’m from the media, do I get a free ticket to the event?

Afraid not – all participants, including accredited media representatives of any kind, are required to buy a ticket.

What information do I need to buy a ticket?

You’ll need the following details:

Name surname

ID/passport number (NB: this ID/passport number must match the ID/passport number presented at the Gate)

Email address

Mobile phone number

On and off site emergency contact details

Tankwa Town address (if known)

I cant come. Can I have a refund?

Unfortunately we dont offer refunds on tickets, however, were able to give you a quick and easy way to re-sell your tickets, using the new re-sale system on Quicket. Their re-sale system enables you to put your tickets back up for sale to people who are looking for them.

Check here for more details, and contact Quicket if you are having any issues with re-sales

Direct Distribution Ticket Questions

Why have Direct Distribution Tickets?

As a city built on the contributions and efforts of a wide range of creative Collectives, it’s crucial that longstanding (and new) contributors are acknowledged and stand a fair chance of being able to access tickets – and this is why we have the Direct Distribution Tickets (DDTs) in place.

It’s also important that we have a solid foundation of veteran burners in Tankwa Town to meet, greet and acculturate eager new participants, ensuring that they not only survive the elements but also fully participate in the AfrikaBurn culture.

Who gets access to Direct Distribution Tickets?

All participants who have registered a creative project, or volunteered repeatedly and consistently for a number of years at any AfrikaBurn event – and also members of Collectives that are registering and contributing a new project.

It’s the project lead’s/main contact person’s responsibility to distribute DDT’s to members of their collective via the Quicket DDT portal. The responsibility then shifts to the individual to complete their info timeously and to buy their ticket/s by Friday 5th November once they have received their unique access code.

NOTE: the term ‘project’ means anything from a humble one-person, portable creative project, all the way up to a massive, 50-crew-member project. It includes all Artwork, Theme Camp, Mutant Vehicle and Performance projects – and also deep volunteering.

DJing a set or dressing up in a great costume? Sorry, that doesn’t qualify as a project (though building a stage and performing, or creating a costume camp, would).

Do these tickets expire?

Yes (they’re valid until 5 November 2021 4:00 pm SAST).

DDTs allocated to a Collective that are not purchased by the deadline are automatically released into General Sales Ticket rounds.

How do DDTs work?

If you qualify for an individual Direct Distribution Ticket (because you’ve registered projects for our event, or are a longstanding volunteer), you’ll be sent an e-mail from Quicket with info on how you go about redeeming your ticket.

If you’re a project lead of a registered creative project and have requested a number of tickets for your Collective, you get sent an e-mail from Quicket with instructions on how to go about distributing the tickets allocated to your crew. Please be aware that the onus is on you to ensure that you allocate those tickets to your crew with enough time for them to buy them before they expire.

What if this is the first time I am registering a creative project, am I less likely to be awarded the tickets I have requested?

Our teams want to encourage as many people as possible to create contribute projects, so the chances are that if you register a project, you’ll get allocated tickets.

How will AfrikaBurn ensure that there is a fair distribution of Direct Distribution Tickets?

All applications will be reviewed before a decision is made. Our Creative and Mutant Vehicle teams have many years worth of history and experience which they will use to cross-check applications.

How does AfrikaBurn know that the people receiving DDTs are in fact participating and contributing to the event?

Our team reviews the historical registrations and identifies the registered projects and their leads. These people are then invited to apply for Creative Collective tickets, on the assumption that they will be participating in a meaningful way again at the next event.

New projects that register are also invited to apply for Creative Collective tickets. They’re given the benefit of the doubt, but the relevant team will check up on the projects on site to ensure that they materialised.

What if I dont have a Collective to join, does that mean I dont have access to DDTs?

If you’re all on your own, but you’re planning a magnificent artwork or mutant vehicle or the like, and you register your project in time, you will likely get access to a DDT.

If you aren’t planning on making something, there will be limited tickets available through the General Sales. If you’re looking for a project to join (and thus secure a DDT), take a look at our Join A Project page, where you can browse connect with Collective crews who are open to new members.

NB: project registrations are not yet fully open, so please wait until the official announcement to apply for a project.

How can I request DDTs for myself and my Collective?

You’ll need to register a project – and to do that, just log into our site with your Bio details, head to your Collective (or create one) and then hit the Artwork, Mutant Vehicle, Performance or Theme Camp project registration options in the sidebar. When you register, you’ll get the option to request DDTs for your Collective / project crew, and our team will get back to you with allocation info.

NB: project registrations are not yet fully open, so please wait until the official announcement to apply for a project.

Thanks for reading – if you know anyone who could use this info about our DDT system, share it with them, thanks.

General Questions

Its my first time what do I do?

If you’ve not been to the event before, it can be quite daunting. However with good preparation and planning it can be a lot easier. Below are some steps that will get you started on your journey to attend and participate meaningfully:

Firstly, check out our guiding principles, this will inform you about the culture of the event and the community.

Then read all the info (and links) on the ‘Preparation’ page of our site.

Go check out 2019’s Survival Guide here. Then go check out Quaggapedia.

Then, maybe have a look at these pages for a bit more info: What is AfrikaBurn? How do I get to Tankwa Town? How do I ‘participate’ in AfrikaBurn?

Check out our community spaces – the Q A Group and the AfrikaBurn Group are a good place to start.

Make sure you like the Facebook page or follow us on Instagram to keep updated.

Sign up for the Baardskeerder Newsletter and any updates by filling out this form.

Optionally, you can sign up on our website which unlocks project registrations and the community directory.

Is AfrikaBurn the same as Burning Man?

AfrikaBurn is a regional event of Burning Man, but is not owned or organisationally managed by Burning Man. Culturally and creatively, it reflects much of the community spirit, art, expression and creativity that Burning Man and Burner culture in general are known for. Whilst similar to Burning Man, by virtue of being in South Africa, it’s also different in many ways.

How do I get to Tankwa Town?

The best place to start is our ‘Getting There’ page.

In addition, there’s the ‘Catch a Bus to AfrikaBurn‘ page that operates as a gift to the community. We’re not sure on their status for 2022, but they’re cost-effective, efficient, and worth trying.

Alternatively to the bus, you can join the Tankwa Town Ride and Share – a group of ride sharing people (this group picks up closer to the event period).

What facilities are there?

Very few. In the spirit of radical self reliance, basic infrastructure in the form of toilets, roads, signage, medics, health and safety officers and an airstrip are provided. All other requirements are created by the participants themselves.

Do I have to dress up, create art, and participate?

Whatever form your participation takes is up to you. The important thing to remember is that AfrikaBurn is created by active participation – and that can take any form.

Can I bring pets or animals?

No pets are allowed, due to the extreme environment and in the interests of maintaining the biological integrity of the site. The only exception to this would be guide dogs for the blind.

What do I need to bring?

Everything.

Can I buy food and drinks at the event?

Simply put: no.

This query falls squarely under the self-reliance area of our event. You need to be responsible for yourselves and your food and water.

That said, you could try chatting to some people in the AfrikaBurn Main Group or the AfrikaBurn Resources Group you could find someone there to help share the load, or a team to team up with.

Where do I buy a bicycle?

Theres a great camp that provides bikes, and offers a delivery and collection service on site. They use the project to provide bicycles to people in need in the local communities. They are Pedals for Peace, and can be found here.

The other option is to try pick up a second-hand bike before you come. Theres a lot of sites for that but youll have to practice radical self-reliance for that.

Will my car make it to the event site?

Ultimately, yes, your car will be fine on the road provided you are as careful and prepared as possible, drive responsibly, and pack two spare tires.

That said, a sturdier car, pickup or 44 would make your journey feel easier, less stressful and far quicker. Check out the Getting There page on our site for more info.

Can I come just for a couple of days?

You are most welcome to join for as long as you can participate. However the event is a deeply immersive experience, and you may not be able to fully appreciate it or be able to be truly involved if youre pushed for time.

Perhaps take a look at these links for more details:

What is AfrikaBurn?
Getting to AfrikaBurn.
Participating at AfrikaBurn.

How do I join a project?

Check out the Community Directory page on our site (you’ll need to register a Burner Bio). It’s where you can view all projects that are open to new members joining them.

You can also post on the AfrikaBurn Group, which is a very active community space, and where you’ll probably get responses from projects who still have some space.

How do I get Involved?

First check out our Participation page here.

Second, we have a Community Directory over here.

And lastly, find people to team up with in the AfrikaBurn Facebook Group.

How do I volunteer?

Shifts for the 2022 AfrikaBurn event have not yet opened, however you can mail the volunteer team directly on: [emailprotected]

You can also check out the Participation page for more info.

What do I do if I am having technical challenges?

We’re sorry you are experiencing challenges on our platforms. We’re happy to help you work out how to get everything working again.

Mail [emailprotected] and let the team know exactly what your issue is. Please try and include screenshots and links to the pages that are an issue. Additionally, if you could let us know what browser you are using, or what mobile device you are using, that would help a lot.

How do I apply for Media Accreditation?

We welcome participation by media representatives at our events, provided there’s some guidelines in place.

If you have plans to publish your content, you need to follow our accreditation process, which you can find on the Press, Film Photo page of our site.

If you’re simply planning to capture the magic of our event for personal purposes then you wouldn’t need to apply for accreditation (unless you wish to anyway).

Please note that applications for accreditation are free, but you would still need to purchase an event ticket to attend.

Can I bring my branded store to the event?

That’s simply not a possibility since AfrikaBurn is built on a totally different set of values than other events and festivals. For one, there’s no branding, marketing or promotion allowed, as it dilutes the experience, and destroys the spirit of gifting that makes our gatherings so special. And, as a gift economy, consumerist culture is completely nullified, making it a rare escape in our world.

Of course, if you’d still like to come, you’re completely welcome but you’d have to take all the lables and branding off your products and hand them out for free.

Are there marketing and partnership opportunities?

That would be a strict “no”.

AfrikaBurn is built on a set of principles, one of which is ‘decommodification’. This ensures that we remain a non-commercial enterprise, and keeps our gatherings free of consumerist culture.

We don’t perform or enable advertising or marketing in any form, in any of our spaces. Neither will we ever partner, or collaborate with a commercial entity for any reason.

Im a performer. Would you like to book me/us?

Due to the participatory nature and ethos of our event, all the performers and artists are either arranged by the participants themselves or are attending on a personal level.

AfrikaBurn does no booking or hiring of artists or performers we dont even have any line-ups.

Where can I provide feedback and suggestions?

We love feedback and suggestions. Please email them to [emailprotected] and our members, directors and operational team will investigate them during our post-event debrief period.

Thank you for taking the time to improve the experience for everyone.

Are there telephone or Wi-Fi services at the event?

No, there are no telephone services, no mobile signal, nor Wi-Fi zones at the AfrikaBurn event.

If you absolutely have to stay in touch, you may find that you can send and receive text messages on the MTN network, however this is super patchy and varies across the site.
