A place to learn about Chinese language and culture,and participate in many Chinese cultural activities Duan Wu Festival, also know as the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival), falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. For 2020, it is on June 25th. The traditions are eating zongzi 粽子 and dragon boat race. What is zongziZongzi is a dumpling made out of sticky rice, and traditionally wrapped in bamboo leaves. The filling varies across the region. In the Northern China, red bean paste is a popular filling. Zongzi from the South is usually savory. Some of the common fillings are salted duck eggs, pork and shiitake mushrooms.The legend of zongzi Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese folk festival observed annually over 2,000 years in China to commemorate Qu Yuan (340-278 BC), an ancient Chinese patriotic poet from Chu kingdom. When Chu’s capital city was occupied by another state, he was heartborkened. He expressed his anger and sorrow by writing the last patriotic peom of Huaisha. He clasped a heavy stone to his chest and leapt into the Milo River. People drove boats to throw rice packages in the river to prevent the fish from eating the poet’s body.Originated from South China, Dragon Boat Festival enjoys higher popularity in southern areas, such as Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong and Fujian Provinces. Making of zongziAfter wrapping, zongzi need to be boiled or steamed for several hours depending on size and fillings added. It can easily be frozen for subsequent consumption once cooked. The Vermont Chinese School organized a fundraising event (February 21st to March 7th, 2020) to benefit Chinese medical centers treating patients with the virus via WeStar Wuhan Relief Effort.Sadly, the virus had begun spreading across the world and WeStar had no longer focus on collecting donations for Wuhan. VCS had sought approval of donors to release funds to benefit local communities in Vermont instead. VCS made the donations to Chittenden Food Shelf ($1400), South Burlington Food Shelf ($291.30) and VT COVID-19 Response Fund ($1467).We are grateful for the support and would like to thank donors for being so thoughtful and showing their kindness in helping others in such as needed time.Donors' list In an abundance of caution amid the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, Vermont Chinese School has made the proactive decision to temporarily suspend classes effective this Friday, March 13, till further notice.VCS will monitor updates from local and federal authorities, the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization as the situation unfolds.Thank you for your understanding and stay safe!
