Description:

In an effort to boost COVID-19 safety on Cape Cod for the summer, the Cape Cod Reopening Task Force plans to expand COVID-19 testing capacity in partnership with medical facilities and Barnstable County. State Senator Julian Cyr said that about 7 percent of year-round residents have been tested, a number that lags behind other regions of the state. “In order to get to this ambitious goal of 20 percent, we're going to need a minimum of five thousand test kits,” he said. Juneteenth brings local rallies and observances. The state reaches a settlement over Plymouth's Pilgrim Nuclear plant. And more coronavirus testing is coming to Cape Cod.  Black sea bass season is going strong, which is good news for anglers and anyone who knows one with an extra fish to spare. They're one of the tastiest fish to come out of our waters. Activists who oppose Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson held a rolling protest through the streets of New Bedford and Dartmouth on Thursday. More than 30 cars decorated with signs demanding that Hodgson resign and alleging that he sympathizes with white supremacy drove past the jails he operates. Racial injustice, institutionalized racism and white privilege are part of our country’s history and very much present in our society today. Today, here on the Cape and Islands, people of color and indigenous people experience racism and live in a society created by white people for white people. On The Point, we talk with activists and with a historian, and we hear some of the voices and stories of people of color and indigenous people living on the Cape and Islands.    When Dave Ross bought his first cranberry bog in the 1980s, the berry plants were over a hundred years old. In fact, most of the cranberry bogs in the area were built in the mid to late 1800s. A lot of people are feeling helpless and  hopeless. On The Point we explore the concept of  "demoralization". Our mental health advisors join us to discuss the experience of facing things we can't control that dominate our lives, and the feelings that can arise.  Psychologist Ann Geagon, Psychiatrist Dr. Marc Whaley, and Psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Schwartz join our host Mindy Todd. This Friday is Juneteenth, a holiday that marks the date in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Now, a movement to make Juneteenth a national holiday is gaining local support.   Nearly 19,000 workers in the renewable energy industry in Massachusetts have lost their jobs since the COVID-19 pandemic started. But solar industry workers on the Cape have largely been able to keep their jobs. On WCAI, Morning Edition host Kathryn Eident and climate change reporter Eve Zuckoff discussed the reasons why.    We are now past the halfway point of June, and knocking on summer’s door. This means that your standard, work-a-day bird migration is over for the time being. Everyone that’s coming back is back, and those passing through are through. Even the late-comers are nesting now, like the Eastern Wood-Pewees that don’t arrive until early June. But that doesn’t mean that the bird finding fun is over, because the wandering weirdo birds are out in full force.
