Coronavirus (COVID-19) Research at the School of Geography and the Environment Along with the rest of the University of Oxford, the School is currently closed during the coronavirus pandemic. We are, however, carrying on our work remotely during these difficult times and we have joined many other researchers around the University in working to understand COVID-19 and its implications. Although some of the most important research into COVID-19 is looking for a vaccine for the virus, there is still lots of work to be done in understanding the implications that this pandemic will have for people, businesses, the economy and the environment. Find out more about our Coronavirus (COVID-19) related research Members of staff and students of the School of Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford have been closely following the most recent protests against racism worldwide as well as those in the city of Oxford. We are also increasingly aware of the often shameful role that the discipline of Geography has played in imperial and colonial projects; of the need to further decolonise our curricula; and of the need to reiterate our commitment to racial justice. In particular, we would like to make clear the extent to which we welcome the transparency and disclosure of undergraduate admissions data at the University of Oxford. This data has helped us to become more aware of the continued lack of racial diversity in our undergraduate admissions. There are similar concerns about the hiring of staff, across the higher education sector. While there are many positive initiatives underway, we know that we have not done enough. We reiterate that as a School we are opposed to racism in all its forms, and are actively working to increase the diversity and inclusivity of our practices and the diversity of our people. The School has committed to work over the summer to review what we have done so far and to plan further action. The Head of School will keep the SoGE community updated on those plans and actions as they develop. Read more Unable to display events as javascript is not enabled.
