keywords: description:I think the first official photos of the all-new Mazda CX-50 are pretty promising.
Unlike early rumors, the CX-50 is not based on the new upcoming larger RWD platform. But on the FWD CX-30 platform.But unlike the CX-30, the CX-50 will be AWD only. And while Mazda will continue selling the CX-5 for a while, that model will now become a zombie. Destined to be replaced by the CX-50 within a year or two. (Just like the CX-3 was on death row as soon as the CX-30 arrived)
The CX-50 looks all-new. But isn't really. As mentioned, it uses the CX-30 platform. It also uses the 2.5 Liter and 2.5 Liter Turbo from the CX-5.And also that good old 6-speed auto. No money was spent here for a new, more modern 8 speed.
A hybrid version is also scheduled to come later. Which actually could end up being the most interesting version.
Obviously, from these pres photos, the new CX-50 will be offered in a more rugged version. Competing more directly with various Subaru models and the Ford Bronco Sport.But other versions will be getting a "regular" chrome grille. And a more crossover-like appearance.A panoramic sunroof is also available, a first for Mazda.And we can also tell a new color is "finally" available, called Zircon Sand.
The interior seems pretty classy and very restrained. Zero originality but it all looks pretty good. Just like other Mazda models, the screen sits on top of the dash but seems better integrated than other cars. Like the Honda Civic.Not sure yet if Mazda will finally offer a true touch screen or not.
Mazda is expecting the CX-50 to eventually add 150 000 sales a year. (Which is pretty much what the CX-5 has been selling for the past couple of years.) The CX-50 won't really add 150 000 to Mazda's total sale numbers since the CX-5 will be less and less popular and quickly replaced by the CX-50.
Is this a very nice addition to the Mazda lineup? Or just a CX-5 replacement "on the cheap"?

And why???
The front end of the cool-looking Volvo XC-40 was perfectly fine. The new headlights are not an improvement at all. And do not match the rest of the angular design as well.
This is just changing for the sake of change.
I cannot see anything else new. Inside, there seems to be more open-pore wood trim. Which, I think, is great. That great-looking wood trim is fantastic in other Volvo models and the XC40 should have it too.
So far, it has been available only on the top-of-the-line version of the small Volvo. It looks like Volvo has decided to offer it in more versions (maybe?) That aluminum trim always looked weird to me. Very "un-Volvo-like. And seems like a strange atempt to attract younger buyers.
Otherwise, the XC40 will probably be getting the revised powertrains with the 48 Volt Hybrid system Volvo has been offering in their other models for 2022.
Which is a good thing.

By 2023, their ID lineup will be quite popular. And it does make sense for their good old ICE models to look a bit like the electric ones. Which will be their last, or second to last, generation.Especially up front, this one looks quite a bit like an ID model.And the whole thing looks much better than the current generation. (which already looked old when it came out)By that time, a new Tiguan will compete with a redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V. As well as a brand new Chevrolet Equinox. And a new Toyota RAV-4 won't be far behind.
And of course, EVs of the same size will by then, pretty much be the same price. Or even cheaper thanks to more generous tax credits and rebates around the corner.

Hard to see anything we haven't seen yet on these new Hyundai Ioniq 6 photos.Still that weird shape that doesn't look nearly as good as the concept.And most parts are still covered.Although I have to say, it still looks a lot like this amazing rendering I posted last week (HERE).
Let's really hope the real thing is close to that illustration.And dare I say: could this be a hatchback? So far every model based on that platform is, so that wouldn't be too crazy.
Or maybe it's just me...

The new Subaru Solterra is basically the exact same car as the new Toyota EV.I was actually surprised to discover a new front end. Subaru actually spent a little bit of money to make the new model look more like a Subaru.And, I guess it works. It looks much busier than the Toyota. At least they didn't give it a chrome grille. But otherwise, they added plenty of unnecessary lines all over the clean Toyota front end.In true Subaru fashion.
I will see both next week at the L.A auto show. We pretty much know everything we need to know about these two. Except for the US range. Which should be a bit over 300 miles for the FWD version.The big question mark left is the price.Same thing with the Ioniq 5...

The revised Hyundai Palisade SUV for 2023 seems to be just around the corner.
The new front end will adopt some of the Tucson styling cues. (Like the small overseas Creta SUV)Which could be an improvement over the sea of cheap-looking chrome on the current version.
The powertrain isn't expected to change. And I haven't heard of a hybrid option...
Inside, it looks like there will be a new steering wheel design. The console seems pretty much the same. The vents above it could be redesigned, it's hard to say.Since we can't see much else, it could still be getting a new dash as well. Or not.
With almost 82 000 sold last year, the Palisade seems to be a hit for Hyundai. And it is surprisingly more than the 75 000 units of the Kia Telluride. (it was the opposite in 2019)
But none of them even come close to the Toyota Highlander with over 212 000 sales last year.(That's actually crazy...)

The new Acura Integra and the 2022 Honda Civic are definitely related.But I really think Acura did a great job coming up with a very different-looking car.To most people, this is not just a fancy Civic at all.
As for the price, it could be quite a premium over a similar Civic Hatch.In order to get the 1.5 Liter Turbo in the Civic Hatch, you need to get at least the EX-L model.Which starts at $26 600. Or almost $4000 less than the Integra.Unless the base Integra's equipment is closer to the Civic Touring which goes for $29 400.
My guess is that Acura will load the base Integra with a bit more stuff than a Civic EX-L. With an option package including even more stuff than what is available in the Civic.Like maybe the fantastic ELS sound system available in all other Acura models.Although no panoramic roof. You can already see a "regular/small" sunroof on the concept...
It would be nice to also add height adjustment for the passenger seat. And vents for the rear ones.Something that is sorely missing from the Civic.
I know this won't happen, but an 8-speed auto would really be welcome to replace the Civic's terrible CVT... Since most people will not be getting the manual, this would be a huge improvement over the cheaper Honda version.

Acura has just introduced the "Integra Prototype". Which is basically a slightly disguised 2023 model.
All we know so far is:
- Going on sale next year. (no dates yet)
- It will have a 6-speed manual available ( we knew that)
- It is powered by a 1.5 Liter Turbo. (probably from the Civic Si)
- And it will cost "around $30 000.
This is all pretty good news. I think the design is very nice. But that horrible color and graphics make it look cheap. I am sure it looks 100% better otherwise.
Not cheap, but it has to be above the Civic. So I guess a well-equiped model for "around $30 000" is fine.
Acura will release better photos, but we won't find out anything more about the production model until next year. And just like that "Civic prototype" from next year, no idea what the interior looks like. But it will not be the same as the Civic.
It doesn't look like a Civic, and I think Acura did a great job here so far.
15commentsLabels:Future cars and trucks Wednesday, November 10, 2021 Mystery SUV: the US Honda HR-V for 2023?Most people seem to think the photos I posted a couple of days ago (HERE) could show the 2023 Honda HR-V.
The "global" version of HR-V has been redesigned a few months ago and is currently on sale in many countries. Including Europe.Honda has claimed the US would be getting a different version with its own design.They've also mentioned the US HR-V would have a slightly larger platform and a "more rugged" styling.
So maybe? It could be? Probably?
It's even hard to compare the prototype with the global HR-V since they actually look so different.Sure, they could be related. Or not...The prototype looks like such a generic design. That front end has zero Honda DNA. As a matter of fact, the whole thing seems to have zero DNA or personality.
If it is the US HR-V, the good news will be the new Hybrid version. (2nd photo from the top)Which comes standard in Europe. It uses a 1.5 Liter engine with a couple of small electric motors producing a bit over 130HP.From personal experience, Honda Hybrids are excellent. I have experienced the Insight as well as the Accord Hybrid and actually think they should make their great hybrid powertrains standard in the US.

Subaru released one more teaser of their all-new Alterra EV. Since we know it will basically be another Toyota clone, I posted a photo of the Toyota version, the bZ4X.
As you can tell, there are 100% the same car. Except for the logos. Even the wheels are the same!
The main difference will probably be the availability of a base FWD model on the Toyota. While the Subaru version will come standard with AWD like a Subarus sold in the US.
And the Subaru does have a real name. Unlike "b4ZX". Which sounds like a robot or a new planet. And is basically a very dumb name for a car.that alone could put the Subaru on top...
The real thing will be revealed tomorrow. With zero surprises, since we already saw the Toyota version. (HERE)
