APSA Statement Condemning Systemic RacismThe recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery have reignited protests and calls for justice in the United States and across the world. These murders are among the latest in a long history of police brutality and violence upon members of the African American community. The American Political Science Association recognizes and condemns in the strongest terms the systemic racism that contributed to these deaths and shares the justified outrage it has provoked. We strongly support the right to protest and are alarmed by the government’s violent responses to peaceful protesters, including excessive uses of force in the name of order. We are also alarmed at the opportunistic criminal conduct of some who do not share the protesters’ commendable goals. These actions are a severe violation of democratic principles.Read the full statement here. See APSA Resources on Systemic Racism & Social Justice.APSA Council Approves New Human Subjects Research Principles GuidanceOn April 4, 2020, at the spring council meeting, the APSA Council approved and adopted the Principles and Guidance document submitted by the Ad Hoc Committee on Human Subjects Research (co-chairs: Scott Desposato and Trisha Phillips). Political scientists who are conducting research involving human subjects may now consult the newly approved document to review the principles and guidance, which range across a variety of topics.Read more here.APSA Supports Accommodations for Tenureand Promotion, Work Deadlines, and Faculty Workloads for the Political ScienceCommunityLikemany disciplines, we especially encourage college and university tenure andpromotion committees, and administrators of undergraduate and graduateprograms, to keep in mind that many scholars will find it difficult to advancetheir research and other professional activities under current conditions andmay require more time for their work.  We recommend that higher educationdecision-makers keep these longer time-frames in mind as they decide how tomake accommodations in tenure and promotion time clocks, student workdeadlines, contingent faculty workloads, and other review processes. Major Gifts to APSA Support New Partnerships and Diversity in the DisciplineWith great appreciation, the APSA announces a major donation of $1.2 million from the Ivywood Foundation, which is substantially funded by the family of Rogers M. Smith, the current APSA President, as well as a personal donation of $200,000 from Rogers Smith and his wife, Mary Summers to the Generation to Generation Campaign for the Ralph J. Bunche Fund. Read more. 1527 New Hampshire Ave NWWashington, DC 20036-1206 Phone: (202) 483-2512 Fax: (202) 483-2657
