I am writing in these times because words, signs and art such as poetry are important ways to raise our voices against injustice. Social art is a response and it’s a call to action, but most importantly it is to provoke change. … And I’m compelled to write in these times of unrest, because poetry is political, and because darkness and dark times need light. Crystal Simone Smith, Duke Humanities Unbounded Fellow and member of the North Carolina Haiku Society Haiku in the Rain Five haiku poets of the Carolina African American Writers’ Collective gathered in the Nasher Museum Sculpture Garden and responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and the global protest movement against police brutality toward Black and brown lives. NorthStar Church of the Arts commissioned black artists to paint beautiful and impactful murals on plywood that temporarily covered storefronts in downtown Durham.
