It is the mission of the South Suburban Special Recreation Association:"To promote the power of choice and to enhance the quality of life of individuals of all abilities, by providing accessible recreation in an environment that promotes dignity, success, and fun." SSSRA is a therapeutic recreation program that is an extension of seven park districts and three recreation and parks departments. It is organized to provide individuals with disabilities or special needs, the opportunity to be involved in year-round recreation. SSSRA programs are for individuals from birth through adult who receive special education services, vocational services, supported employment, or who have recreational needs not met by traditional park district programs. This could include individuals who have varying degrees of physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, emotional difficulties, hearing or visual impairments, and developmental delays. Persons residing in the SSSRA member agencies are considered residents. These agencies are: Country Club Hills Park District, Hazel Crest Park District, Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, Lan-Oak Park District, Matteson Recreational Division, Oak Forest Park District, Olympia Fields Park District, Park Forest Recreation and Parks Department, Richton Park Parks and Recreation Department, and Tinley Park - Park District. Please see below for the most current information about our Summer 2020 season, including in-person and virtual programs.In-Person ProgramsSSSRA has made the difficult decision to cancel Summer Day Camp, as well as many of our summer programs and special events.We will continue to offer virtual programs and will be able to offer the following in-person programs and special events:Trail TrekkersAerobicsLet's DanceChristmas in JulyIn-person programs will begin the week of June 29 and run through the week of August 3.In-person programs will be held at the SSSRA Office. We have enough outdoor space to accommodate small groups, and each program will have a maximum of 8 participants and 2 staff.All in-person programs will be held outdoors. Participants must be able to follow in-person program guidelines, including maintaining 6 feet of social distancing or wearing a mask. They must be able to stay with the group. If they cannot follow these guidelines they will not be able to participate in these programs. Additional details and guidelines may be added.Please contact our office for questions regarding Inclusion.Virtual ProgramsWeek 6 of our virtual programs begins Monday, June 8.Week 7 begins Monday, June 15.Virtual programs will continue to be free for weeks 6 & 7.No virtual programs will be held the week of June 22.Beginning June 29, virtual programs will be offered in 2 week sessions, and a small fee will be required.
