The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the lives of people around the world, but those in developing countries are likely to suffer the most in the face of this global crisis. At the Center for International Development (CID@Harvard), we see this as a call to action. We are responding quickly in the following ways to implement solutions: we are collecting funding information; we are connecting researchers, foundations, and policymakers to channel our resources; and we are sharing the most up-to-date work of our experts to ensure it is reaching those who need it most. Researching new strategies and tactics to assist public organizations struggling with incomplete or ineffective policy implementation. The Growth Lab works to understand the dynamics of growth and to translate those insights into more effective policymaking in developing countries. We place increased economic diversity and complexity at the center of the development story and uncover how countries move into industries that offer increased productivity. Evidence for Policy Design (EPoD) conducts development economics research, training, and policy outreach.  We aim to improve lives by designing, testing and enabling better policies worldwide. We work closely with policymakers to solve some of the most pressing policy problems through innovation, testing and iteration at all stages of solution development. CID Director Asim I. Khwaja coauthors a multidisciplinary proposal with a team of experts, experienced researchers and practitioners to respond to COVID-19. Elements of the proposal are being tested in various places – including Pakistan – where several members of the team have been actively supporting the state’s response efforts at national and sub-national levels.  Harvard Kennedy School Professor Carmen M. Reinhart has been appointed as the new chief economist and vice president of the World Bank Group.World Bank Group President David Malpass made the announcement today in Washington, noting that the appointment comes “as we boost our efforts to restore growth and meet the urgent debt and recession crises facing many of our client countries.” Governments are most important in times of public crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals, no matter how talented or self-reliant, look to their governments for help to empower or deploy the powers and potentialities of the collective. But many people tasked with leading public organizations in times of crises struggle to know if and how to rise to the occasion. In a series of blog posts, Building State Capability Faculty Director Matt Andrews shares ideas for leaders questioning how they can help and what kind of leadership is required in crises.
