In the fall of 2014 I was living my dream. I had just finished my freshman year at NYU, where I studying musical theater. I was living in the East Village, experiencing everything that New York has to offer. Even though I was a long way from my family in Miami, I absolutely loved it. However, I soon started to feel lethargic, coupled with a lymph node that was popping out of my neck and getting bigger. Something just wasn’t right. I was downing 9 Advil a day and started seeing doctors .... I am a 27-year-old transgender man who won a hard-fought battle with stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma just after graduating from college. My story begins with a good friend. One night, we were hanging out around the house and they caught a glimpse of my neck under a particular light and said, “Hey, come here for a second, your neck looks pretty swollen.” We both looked in the mirror and noticed something protruding from the space where the left side of my neck met my clavicle. I called my doctor’s office and made an appointment for the next day. On December 29, 2011, I heard those numbing words “you have cancer.” I was 23 years old, about to turn 24 and my whole world came to a screeching halt. After months of feeling “off,” multiple visits to all kinds of doctors, repeat blood work, scans and biopsies, it was finally determined that I had Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. For the next 2 1/2 years I would endure monthly spinal taps, rigorous chemotherapy infusions, countless pills and needles, regular hospital stays, multiple trips.... Hello, my name is Nikolas Davison. I am 13 years old, turning14 in July, and have been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) for three-and-a-half years. On November 7, 2016 I was misdiagnosed with appendicitis and was taken to the hospital by my father. They took my blood and ran tests. This was a painful thing to go through and I was very scared. After more tests, they knew that I had cancer. I was shocked, scared and even horrified. I never thought in a million years that I would ge.... I was 24 and otherwise healthy, hiking the Grand Canyon (literally) with friends, when my neck started to hurt and my arm started to swell. By the end of my vacation two days later, I was in so much pain that I could barely turn my head or lift my arm. I returned to Detroit and went straight from the airport to the ER, where, after hours of tests, I learned about a softball-sized tumor in my chest cavity, which was pressing on veins near my heart, causing blood clots in my shoulder, which r.... In the beginning, when I was processing my cancer diagnosis, I kept asking myself, “why me?”. That after all these years I worked hard to better my health, eating the right foods and working out. But in the world of cancer it didn’t matter, this disease couldn’t have recognize all I’ve done, and I was chosen. I am now part of their world, and how I travel through my journey will depend on me.
