The Semi-annual IACUC inspections are restarting and this quick meeting will provide researchers with essential reminders as we all ease back into research. After a ramp-down of research activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, investigators who use animal models are very eager to ramp-up their studies. The following guidelines are designed to meet the requirements of the University and local, state, and Federal requirements while at the same time protecting the health and welfare of both University faculty and staff and our animal population. The recently-released 2020 AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals specify a change in procedures for euthanizing rodents with carbon dioxide. The new Guidelines require a displacement rate of 30 to 70% of the chamber volume with carbon dioxide per minute (whereas the previous 2013 Guidelines specified a displacement rate of 10% to 30% of the chamber volume per minute).
