This Moment and Beyond: Video Highlights from Gallatin Professor Eve Meltzer Awarded Schomburg Center Fellowship The cornerstone of the Gallatin School is its individualized approach to education. Gallatin puts the individual student first. With the support and guidance of faculty advisers, students design unique courses of study, exploring multiple disciplines or various perspectives on specific areas of study not available in traditional departments. Faculty Advising Academic advising is central to the life of a Gallatin student. Gallatin s unique educational philosophy and structure requires students to develop individualized concentrations under the guidance of Gallatin advisers. The Concentration At Gallatin, students develop individualized programs of study, the central focus of which is the concentration. Interdisciplinary Seminars Every year, Gallatin offers more than 100 different interdisciplinary seminars in the liberal arts that focus on major issues or themes in—and across—the humanities and arts, social sciences, and sciences. Study Across NYU Gallatin students may take courses in most of the schools, departments and programs of NYU. Each semester there are several hundred courses to choose from, many taught by some of the country’s leading research scholars and teachers. Internships An internship is a credit-bearing work experience in a non-classroom environment, which enables a student to learn experientially at a social institution, cultural organization, community-based organization or corporation. Tutorials + Independent Study Tutorials are small groups of two to five students working closely with a faculty member on a common topic, project, or skill. An independent study provides students with the opportunity to work one-on-one with a faculty member. Overview As crucial means of critical thinking and creative expression, writing is at the heart of Gallatin’s curriculum. Writing Courses With more than 30 writing courses each semester, Gallatin students have the opportunity to engage in diverse genres and writing practices. Gallatin Review The Gallatin Review, an annual journal of student poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art, is edited by students under faculty supervision. Confluence Confluence is an online platform for student writing, art, and research at Gallatin. Literacy Review An annual journal of writing from adult literacy programs throughout New York City, edited by Gallatin students. Overview The arts curriculum includes more than 20 different workshops each semester in music, dance, theater, the visual arts, architecture and design. Gallatin Arts Festival The Gallatin Arts Festival is a week-long, community-wide celebration of the unique artistry and interdisciplinary scholarship of students at the Gallatin School. Gallatin Galleries It is the goal of the Gallatin Galleries to engage contemporary social issues through a broad range of contemporary art, documents, and events. Showcases Artists thrive at Gallatin, where students are involved in theater, visual arts, music, and dance. Gallatin undergraduates and graduate students present their work in a variety of venues. Urban Democracy Lab The Urban Democracy Lab was established in January of 2014 with the aim of providing a space for scholars, students, and practitioners to collaborate and exchange ideas for cultivating just, sustainable, and creative urban futures. Global Fellowship in Urban Practice The Gallatin Global Fellowship in Urban Practice (GGFUP) provides funding for Gallatin undergraduate and graduate students to pursue extended research projects. Human Rights Fellowship Apply for funding to pursue human rights-focused summer research and experiential learning projects. Open to all NYU undergraduates and specified graduate students. Literacy Review An annual journal of writing from adult literacy programs throughout New York City, edited by Gallatin students. Overview One of the most exciting opportunities NYU students have is the chance to live, learn, and engage with different cultures through study away. Gallatin Global Courses Take Gallatin undergraduate courses during the Fall and Spring semesters at NYU s Global Academic Centers. Gallatin currently offers courses at all locations except Abu Dhabi and Shanghai. Gallatin Travel Courses Take a short-term, discussion-based seminar led by Gallatin faculty in another country or region. Students experience each location hands-on with site visits. Offered during the Summer, J-term, and Spring semester (with a spring break travel component). Human Rights Fellowship Apply for funding to pursue human rights-focused summer research and experiential learning projects. Open to all NYU undergraduates and specified graduate students. NYU Global Sites Study at NYU s global academic centers, which offer NYU and Gallatin courses, including Gallatin s Global Fashion program. PRIORITY DEADLINES: Sept. 15 (Spring), Feb. 15 (Fall/year). Applying by these deadlines is highly encouraged. Global Faculty-in-Residence Each year, Gallatin hosts several visiting faculty members who share their international perspectives on pressing social, political, and intellectual issues. Overview Gallatin’s Master of Arts program offers each student an opportunity to explore his or her unique interests. Working closely with a faculty adviser, the student creates an individualized, interdisciplinary program shaped according to his or her own vision. Scholarships + Funding There are a variety of sources of funding at Gallatin, from supplemental tuition scholarships to the thesis support fund and more. Advising Advising is a key component of the Gallatin MA program. Throughout the program, the student has expert help in negotiating the resources of a large university and to enhance his or her program goals.
