Watch the hearing via this NPR livestream: When the coronavirus pandemic first hit New Hampshire, many public health leaders worried about the state’s rural communities. Smaller towns tend to have more elderly patients and fewer health care resources. Some doctors warned that even a small number of cases could overwhelm the region’s hospitals. But a new report finds that rural areas of Vermont and New Hampshire handled the coronavirus outbreak better than expected. The authors of the report, Dartmouth College Professors Elizabeth Carpenter-Song and Anne Sosin, joined NHPR’s All Things Considered host Peter Biello to discuss some of the highlights of their study.  Listen Listening... 6:53 (Below is a lightly edited transcript of the interview.) Broadband was a central focus of the New Hampshire Electric Co-op’s annual meeting on Monday. While a vote to include facilitating broadband access in the co-op's bylaws failed last week, many members still see it as a priority for the non-profit. Co-op CEO Steve Camerino told members they're looking at available federal and state funds to expand broadband access. He says there are a few ways this could happen. New Hampshire will longer ask aspiring lawyers about their mental health history in order to pass the bar. The state court system joins Massachusetts, New York and a handful of other jurisdictions that have recently made the change. New Hampshire’s decision comes from the committee of lawyers that judges what’s known as the character and fitness of people who want to practice law in the state. They say they’ll continue to consider applicants’ past conduct. But they’ll no longer ask about history, diagnosis, or treatment or mental health or substance use problems. Protesters gathered at Whole Foods in Bedford this weekend after the store sent two workers home for wearing masks supporting Black Lives Matter. After being sent home several times, the women say they were told the store has a policy against any slogans or messaging outside the company's own. They think it's unfair. New Hampshire’s day camps are allowed to open today, but some won’t be bringing kids back until later in the season. Rus Wilson, Portsmouth’s recreation director, says that city's camps are starting up on July 6th, the same day its public pool opens. With schools shut down, districts across the state scrambled to not only continue to feed the minds of the students they serve, but their bodies as well. Though the school year is done, many districts are still attempting to provide meals to local children and families. So far, officials say there are plenty of options available to keep New Hampshire children fed this summer, including school breakfast and lunch programs that are extending throughout the summer and increased access to government assistance meant to cover food costs. The state expects to soon declare a drought in the southern tier and lower Lakes Region, after an abnormally dry spring and a winter without much snow to recharge streams and groundwater.
