Description:

University Technical Colleges (UTCs) are government-funded schools with a STEM focus. They provide a unique and relevant approach to education which addresses the changing needs of students and employers in the 21st Century. Established by companies and universities in areas of high demand for talent, UTCs provide sought-after technical qualifications and benefit from industry standard equipment and specialist staff to provide students with the skills valued by employers. Through their association with employers and universities, through project-based learning, and through a focus on technical subjects, UTCs bridge the gap between the world of education and the world of work. Today, 48 UTCs are open across England, educating over 14,000 students, and supported by more than 400 employers and universities. More There are currently 48 UTCs in England, one more due to open in September 2020 and a number of applications for future openers. Find a UTC Why work with us? UTCs were established by companies and universities in areas of high demand for talent. They train young people with the attributes needed to address the skills gap in technical industries. Why choose us? UTCs provide a broad choice of pathways either to university, higher degree apprenticeships, or directly into a career. The impressive track record of student destinations after leaving UTCs is testament to the quality of this distinctive educational experience. “Given the importance of science and engineering to our economy, and thepotential skills shortage in these areas, the idea of a school like this is obviousand yet it takes someone to actually do it. That is the geniusof the place, that someone has got the concept up and running and that they aredelivering the curriculum in partnership with organisations such as the Science andTechnology Facilities Council.” Professor Brian Cox “UTCs impress me because they are not just training the next generation of STEM professionals and developing a much needed skills pipeline to the careers of the future, they are offering their students the opportunity to make the important connection between what they learn in the classroom and how it relates to the real world.” Astronaut, Tim Peake “Too many school and college leavers lack the abilities employers look for. UTCs give employers the chance to do something about it at the local level. We’re directly involved in UTC Reading designing the curriculum, choosing qualifications and delivering exciting projects which bring learning to life.” Nigel Ward, Network Rail “Over half of the roles in the Royal Navy are engineering, that’s why it’s great the UTC provides an exciting learning environment for students to learn all aspects of engineering. We are privileged to be supporting young engineers. We need to encourage this area of expertise. If we do not get it right we sink and we are not protecting the country. Engineering is our future and you young people are our future.” Royal Navy’s Head of Sea Training, Rear-Admiral John Clink “I worked in manufacturing before becoming an MP, and I know how important it is to have the right skills that this college provides. When you talk to the students you get a true sense of their passion and enthusiasm they have for the skills they are learning here. It is truly inspiring, and we need to be doing more of this.” Gavin Williamson, Secretary of State for education Baker Dearing Educational Trust is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee registered at 2nd Floor, 1 The Sanctuary, London, SW1P 3JT in England and Wales.
