Description:

Many Christians reflect often on how the resurrection impacts the everyday life of believers. Because Jesus lives, we will live too. But what about the ascension of Jesus? Is it a doctrine we return to?In the following excerpt from Patrick Schreiner’s forthcoming book, The Ascension of Christ: Recovering a Neglected Doctrine, we see five reasons that we sometimes overlook the ascension—and why Jesus’ resurrection isn’t complete without it. There has been so much change that when my elementary-age children were asked where they lived, they stared blankly and then turned to me for the correct answer. The primary question in our family right now is, “Where is home?”This question is not limited to expatriate families. It is one I frequently had when I was a child moving from military base to military base, in my teenage years when my parents divorced, and when I moved into my college dorm room. A home is not merely a place to live, but a place of belonging and safety. “Home” is such an anchoring concept, and its absence may leave us unmoored in a chaotic life. These times of chaos can lead to blessing, however, as we are forced to cast ourselves on the strength of the Lord, and find that he is enough for all our weakness.Psalm 84 has been a comfort to me this year. The psalmist declares, “Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs” (Psa 84:5–6).In these times of upheaval, all our typical sources of strength can easily be sapped. No longer can we rely on our experience and understanding, for this is new territory. When our resources are insufficient, it can be terrifying. These times of chaos can lead to blessing, however, as we are forced to cast ourselves on the strength of the Lord, and find that he is enough for all our weakness. The psalmist in Psalm 84 also says that those whose hearts are set on pilgrimage are blessed. Our natural selves long for a home, for stability, for comfort, and for some measure of predictability. A heart set on pilgrimage recognizes that moving toward God often means leaving behind those very things. As we follow Jesus—who himself had “no place to lay his head” (Matt 8:20)—we find that we become “foreigners and exiles” in this world (1 Pet 2:11). God becomes our place of belonging, our only true home, and this makes us foreigners in every other place in this world that we might have previously found refuge in.The “Valley of Baka” can be translated as the “Valley of Tears.” This is an important aspect of this pilgrimage we embark on. It is painful. It involves loss and grief. Jesus promised his disciples that in this world we would have trouble (John 16:33). But this pilgrimage turns the “Valley of Tears” into a “place of springs.” New life bubbles up from the very ground of pilgrimage as the Lord redeems the pain and loss for his purposes in us.The author of Hebrews speaks of those who walk by faith toward a better home through many Valleys of Tears. He writes, “If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had the opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them” (Heb 11:15–16).May we press on toward our true home, with our hearts set on pilgrimage. This post is adapted from the original post in the May/June 2020 edition of Bible Study Magazine.Aubry Smith is a cross-cultural trainer for a Christian international nonprofit organization. The research included examining the Greek lemma sozo in verse 19 and discerning whether it refers to physical or spiritual healing. Locating all occurrences of sozo was part of the study process:Open an interlinear Bible such as the NASB to Luke 17:19 (A)Right-click on the word well (B)Select from the left side of the menu the lemma sozo (the one with the ring icon) (C)Select from the right side of the menu Bible Word Study (D)Notice in the Translation section the lemma occurs 107 times in the NASB New Testament (E)Please note the Translation section by default will search the entire Old or New Testament for a Hebrew or Greek lemma. When trying to discern a contextual meaning of a word, however, we want to pay close attention to how a specific biblical author used a word.So let’s limit the search range to the book of Luke:Click the verse range drop-down list, which probably says All Passages (F)Type Lk in the Reference range box at the top (G)Select Luke from the drop-down list (H)Notice the Translation ring automatically adjusts the search range revealing that sozo occurs 17 times in Luke in the NASB New Testament (I)If you’d like to include Acts in the search, notice Luke-Acts is already listed as a predefined search range in the drop-down list. (J)Also notice other sections like Root and Senses are also affected by the adjusted search range. The reason I point this out is I’ve noticed some Logos users are now aware we can adjust the verse range in Bible Word Study. Being able to do so makes this Guide even more helpful for our research! For more detailed training about Bible Word Study, please check out 24/7 video training at mpseminars.com.And don’t forget to follow faithlife.com/mpseminars, and you’ll automatically receive a FREE digital download of Dr. Grant Osborne’s commentary Ephesians Verse by Verse.Follow the Morris Proctor Seminars Faithlife groupWhen you follow Morris faithlife.com/mpseminars group, you’ll automatically receive a FREE digital download of Dr. Grant Osborne’s commentary Ephesians Verse by Verse.
