In the Midst of the Storm

John 6: 16-21

“Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.” John 6:21

I remember the day my son and grandson brought over a torn canvas off their sailboat to repair. We ordered the thread and needles needed, but not knowing how actually to sew it, I prayed. Looking at the sailcloth I noticed all kinds of stains and places battered by the wind and sun. The sail cloth reminded me of how we set sail in Christ, but because of life’s storms, we too become battered and tattered, and torn by abuse. But we have God’s Holy Spirit who is always present to mend our ways, and so we can set sail again, and again. (Psalm 46:1)
It also occurred to me that without the wind the sails on our boat go limp, and we lay stagnant, unable to move, going absolutely nowhere. Unless we head into the wind our sails have no power to move us along. Heading into the wind our sails receive the power to move us across the vast oceans of rough weather. The Peace He gives is like smooth sailing and protection within our hearts. He will not depart.
Persistence in faith is like that sailboat moving forward into the headwind, not going the opposite way. We are never alone, but like Christ’s disciples, we must see Christ in the midst and invite Him into our boat.
We will not always have smooth sailing, and it is impossible to avoid the storms, but with Jesus alongside us, we are assured of crossing over the horizon, into eternal life, into His Arms.

The Bounty of the Breasts and El Shaddai

“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” Luke 6:38

Nothing illustrates this concept in giving than what takes place after the birth of a child; the breasts begin the process of giving milk and in time overflow. No scientist can determine where in the body the breastmilk originates and how it is produced, but one thing is known it is the perfect food for an infant, nothing else comes close.
And the more the breasts give, the more it produces the milk flows.

I’ll never forget the time I gave birth to my son, my second child. It was the most transforming experience of my life. I trusted God for his birth and not man. Without any medical interventions, the Lord delivered.

“She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Genesis 4:1

What followed was the confidence to breastfeed this precious child which was more about faith than technique.

And isn’t that faith? God has all the provision we need, if we tap into His love and trust, the milk continues to flow.

“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,  now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” 1 Peter 2:2-3


All it takes is to be hungry and thirsty for the Word of God.

Passing Over to the Promise Land

Isn’t it wonderful that the Lord suddenly opens the scriptures, pulling back a veil to show us more of Himself?  For example, In Exodus 28 I read how the priest wore an onyx stone on each shoulder “to bear the names of God’s people  as a memorial before the LORD.”
(Exodus 28:11-12)

 Inscribed on each stone were six tribes of Israel.  Immediately, I recognized the correlation while reading Joshua 4:1-24 about the Israelites crossing the Jordan River on dry land.

After the tribes of Israel walked past the Ark of the Covenant into the Jordan River Joshua instructed a member of each tribe to return and carry a stone upon their shoulder to the place they were to camp that night. This was an everlasting memorial to them how God opened the way to cross over to the Promised Land where all His promises are fulfilled.

“Suddenly, as I saw this correlation, I saw one more thing- the shoulders of my Savior Jesus Christ carrying His lamb.”
 (Luke 15: 3-6)

The early church understood Christ has made us one as depicted in paintings on the wall of Christian catacombs. One painting depicts a shepherd carrying a lamb on his shoulders with sheep on both sides. I believe this represents two flocks- Jews and Gentile believers.
(Ephesians 3:6, John 10:16)

He never forgets nor forsakes us, but transfers us from His shoulders to the bosom of His heart, carrying us through the many trials in this life. We are forever sealed for redemption. (Ephesians 1:13-14)

“Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.”

The work He begins in us He completes. He is with us and for us and nothing can separate us from his great love.
(Song of Solomon 8:6, Philippians 1:6, Romans 8:39)

Near HIs Heart

“He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.”  Isaiah 40:11

Anchored in Hope

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,  Where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”  Hebrews 6:19-20

While studying the construction of the Tabernacle I saw the fence that enclosed the courtyard as significant as it relates to the Church. The white linen cloths connected by the posts/pillars stand righteously erect,  set securely positioned, and immovable within their bronze bases. (Exodus 27:17-18)
But what suddenly got my attention was how the posts representing the Body, the Church were anchored within and outside the courtyard, secured on both sides with strong pegs and ropes.

Immediately, I thought about how God promised to hold us up by His right hand. Though we fall, we will not be cast down because Jesus is at the right hand of the Father interceding for those in Christ,  holding us up whenever we lean too far from His grace.
Our hope is anchored in His salvation and redemption will surely take place.
(Ephesians 1:13, Hebrews 7:25)

Further demonstrated is how the pillars are held firmly both inside and outside the courtyard; symbolizing, that we are in this world but not of this world. As believers, we stand firm in our relationship with Christ and firm in our faith. (Philippians 4:4-6)

The Tabernacle sets squarely within the Courtyard where Christ’s presence sustains.
He is in us and there He reigns and remains.

America – Prodigal Son

Founding Father's Faith

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

When I was an undergraduate in the 80s I took American History. I learned a lot about how our country was formed. We were assigned an essay assessing what we’d learned. The instructor formed the essay question with a liberal slant, asking us to determine whether or not the US was driven to separate from England because of imperialistic pursuits or for other reasons. We were to use the events leading up to the proclamation for Independence to prove our point.  So I prayed. I asked the Lord to give me the theme for this approach. When I went to bed that evening I woke up with a vivid impression of an unborn baby developing within a womb. The womb represented Mother England and the baby was America, a developing Republic not yet born. The developing country was looking less and less like mother England, having unique characteristics of its own. Until it no longer resembled the mother country and was born. The umbilical cord tying the infant nation to its tyrannical roots was severed when it proclaimed its independence. Thus, the United States of America began to thrive on the rights of self-government, religious freedom, and the pursuit of happiness.

The Constitution was written to guarantee all citizens this right and acknowledged God as the guardian of those rights. In the Preamble of the Declaration of Independence, it states:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Many of the founding fathers had a religious foundation with roots in Biblical scripture concerning the law of morality and the structure of the new nation’s constitution  paralleled those truths:

“Every civil government is based upon some religion or philosophy of life. Education in a nation will propagate the religion of that nation. In America, the foundational religion was Christianity. And it was sown in the hearts of Americans through the home and private and public schools for centuries. Our liberty, growth, and prosperity was the result of a Biblical philosophy of life. Our continued freedom and success is dependent on our educating the youth of America in the principles of Christianity.” Noah Webster

 The earliest American public schools incorporated scripture, with handwriting, reading, and other core subjects.

The alphabet made bEarly American Instructional Reading Booksiblical references such as examples:
A-Adam-In Adam’s fall, we sinned all.”  The Lord’s Prayer, The Creed, etc.,

Moral teachings based on the Ten Commandments were also incorporated into the reading assignments. So from the earliest beginnings of formal education to the establishment of higher learning our institutions maintained a biblical foundation in its core learning.

Our Independence and sovereign protection germinated from the divine seed of trusting in the Lord.  Thenceforth, our nation prospered and influenced other nations.

Alexis de Tocqueville a French historian and statesman visited the United States to discover what made  America great and reported the following, from His quote:

“I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers—and it was not there. . . . . in her fertile fields and boundless forests—and it was not there. . . . .in her rich mines and her vast world commerce—and it was not there. . . . in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution—and it was not there.
Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power.  America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.”

“Lord, forgive me for remaining silent when having the opportunity to speak. As I have come to the end of myself I look up and see your arms outstretched ready to receive me back, honoring the Father, by lifting up my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, His Word, whenever the opportunity presents itself.” Doula Faith  

There is only One God and His Son is Jesus Christ. We do not pray to other gods, but to the one who has brought us salvation through His shed blood,  Jesus Christ.
May revival in our nation start with every one of us, called by His Name.

 Abide in God’s Love

Wear this on Your Hand and Bind this to Your Heart

Deuteronomy 11:18-21

Before Jesus went to the cross, He gave His disciples these commandments:
His commandments were to abide in Him and His Love.
“Abide” means to “remain”, depend on, and stay with. We abide in Him by listening to His Word and doing what He says.  (John 15: 1-17)

His two commandments are to love God with all of our heart and to love others as much as we love ourselves.  (Matthew 22:34-40)

 God Showed Us His Love
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

How We Show Others, We Love Them
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”  1 Corinthians 13: 4-7

How We Show God, We Love Him – “Lift Jesus Up”
And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” John 12:32

  • Put God first in Everything: Time/Money/Occupations/Family/Friends.
    Mary put Jesus first and was rewarded with His presence. (Luke 10:38-42)
  • Read and Meditate on God’s Word, daily.
  • Be ready at all times to share your faith and the gospel.
  • Commune with Christ through Prayer
  • Keep His Commandments of Love.

    The Fruit of God’s Love

    “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulnessgentleness and self-control.  Against such things, there is no law.  Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.  Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”  Galatians 5:22-25
