Feminist Periodicals 

Feminist Periodicals is an open access repository of digitized contents pages of 150 academic journals and pop culture magazines for researchers and scholars to view what is currently being published in the fields of Feminism, Gender and Women’s Studies, Sexuality Studies, and LGBTQIA+ Studies. Since many international and grassroots titles are not indexed in standard sources, Feminist Periodicals is the best key to their contents. Feminist Periodicals is made available through the Office of the Gender and Women’s Studies Librarian at the University of Wisconsin.

Independent Voices (An Open Access Collection of an Alternative Press) 

Independent Voices is an open access digital collection of alternative press newspapers, magazines and journals, drawn from the special collections of participating libraries. These periodicals were produced by feminists, dissident GIs, campus radicals, Native Americans, anti-war activists, Black Power advocates, Hispanics, LGBT activists, the extreme right-wing press and alternative literary magazines during the latter half of the 20th century.

Religious Magazine Archive 

A searchable archive of magazines devoted to religious topics, spanning 19th-21st centuries. The publications were originally written by/for a wider populace rather than academic/cultural elites and offer insights into, for example, the influence of belief systems on public life, the history of popular religious movements and the means used by religions to gain adherents and communicate their ideologies. A wide variety of religions and denominations are represented, allowing for comparative studies of religions during this period.

American Periodicals (1740-1940) 

American Periodicals provides access to full-text articles from over 1100 American magazines and journals published between 1740 and 1940. Contents include America’s first scientific journal, Medical Repository, popular magazines like Vanity Fair and Ladies’ Home Journal, early professional journals such as the Publications of the American Economic Association, as well as articles of investigative journalism and social commentary. Also includes access to full-color scans of documents archived at the Center for Research Libraries. This is an informative source for anyone studying history, American literature, politics, women’s studies, and art history.

Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive 

An archival research resource containing the essential primary sources for studying the history of the film and other entertainment industries, from the era of vaudeville and silent movies through to 2000. The core US and UK trade magazines covering film, music, broadcasting and theater are included, together with film fan magazines and music press titles. Comprehensive information on specific films, plays, theaters, actors, directors, TV series, film studios, musicians, genres, record labels, subcultures and youth movements.

The Rolling Stone Archive 

The backfile of Rolling Stone, from its launch in 1967 to the present. One of the most influential consumer magazines of the 20th-21st centuries, it initially sought to reflect the cultural, social, and political outlook of a generation of students and young adults. It has been a leading vehicle for rock and popular music journalism, as well as covering wider entertainment topics such as film and popular culture. Major journalists and authors to have contributed include Hunter S. Thompson, Patti Smith, and Tom Wolfe.

McCain Library’s 2024 Arseneau Awardee!

Jada Beasley ’24 is McCain Library’s 2024 Arseneau Awardee. This award, created in memory of the late alumna Marjo Dobbs Arseneau ’89 who was an academic librarian before her life was cut short by cancer in 1997, honors a junior or senior Scottie who has demonstrated a commitment to pursuing professional work in libraries or archives. The Arseneau Award includes a cash component to assist with graduate school costs.

An English major in Agnes Scott’s 4 + 1 Education program with Mercer University, Jada presented her English senior seminar topic at SpARC on April 23. Raised in Hiram, Georgia, Jada volunteered at a small public library for 3 years before she transferred to Agnes. She also volunteered at McCain Library before starting to work there as an Outreach student assistant. Last summer, she interned both at McCain and the law school library at Emory University. In October 2023, she co-presented with Paxton Martin ’24 (the 2023 Arseneau Awardee) and McCain librarians Christina Tatum and Christopher Bishop at the Georgia Libraries Conference in Athens. In addition to her current student job at McCain, Jada works as a circulation assistant for the Decatur Public Library. For her post-graduation plans, Jada has job offers from two libraries and is deciding between two Master’s in Library Science graduate program acceptances – a clear commitment to a library career. Congratulations, Jada! We look forward to seeing where your path leads next!

The Vogue Archive‎ 

A searchable archive of American Vogue, from the first issue in 1892 to the current month, reproduced in high-resolution color page images. Pages, advertisements, covers and fold-outs have been included, with rich indexing enabling researchers to find images by garment type, designer and brand names. The Vogue Archive preserves the work of the world’s greatest fashion designers, stylists and photographers and is a unique record of American and international fashion, culture and society from the dawn of the modern era to the present day.

Men’s Magazine Archive 

A collection of men’s-interest magazine backfiles serving research in men’s studies/history but also offering important additional perspectives for women’s studies. It includes some of the earliest publications of this type – National Police Gazette and Argosy – and covers key topics such as fashion, sports, health, and arts/entertainment.

The GQ Archive 

The backfile of GQ magazine, from its launch in 1931 (as Apparel Arts) to the present. One of the longest-running, most influential men’s magazines, GQ expanded its initial focus on fashion to cover general men’s-interest subjects. The digital archive makes available a wealth of editorial content and photography, providing essential insights into the 20th/21st-century history of fashion, popular culture, masculinity, and society.

Health & Fitness Magazine Archive 

The backfiles of consumer magazines devoted to health and fitness topics. With publications aimed at a male readership (e.g. Flex, Men’s Health) and women’s titles (e.g. Women’s Health, Women’s Health Activist), this collection supports research in topics such as the history of sex roles, body image, fitness/exercise, public health, food/nutrition, and medicine. The backfile of Prevention (from 1950) offers over six decades of content reflecting contemporary developments in these areas.

Welcome McCain Library’s New Access Services Evening Superviser: Kimba Armbrust-Kohler!

Please welcome Kimba Armbrust-Kohler as McCain Library’s new evening Access Services Supervisor! Kimba comes to Agnes Scott with a background in academic library services spanning more than 21 years. Born and raised in Atlanta, her career was previously spent at Georgia State University’s Clarkston campus for 6 years, following 14 years at GSU’s downtown Atlanta campus. Her favorite part about working in libraries is being surrounded by so many books and meeting and talking to patrons. To Kimba, people are incredibly fascinating, interesting, and exciting, so in addition to the beautiful campus, Kimba is most thrilled to meet the students at Agnes Scott and to hear their stories. During her time at GSU, Kimba studied numerous topics including Anthropology, Women’s Studies, and Philosophy. In her free time, she enjoys reading, gardening and working with different herbal practices, and crafting fiber arts projects. Next time you are in McCain during an afternoon or evening, stop by the Circulation Desk and meet Kimba!

MedicLatina 

MedicLatina provides access to the full text for more than 140 peer-reviewed medical journals in native Spanish. The majority of full-text titles are available in native (searchable) PDF or scanned-in-color. A wide range of topics are covered including neuroscience, cardiology, nephrology, biomedicine, clinical research, pediatrics, human reproduction, clinical pathology, cancer research, and hematology.

MEDLINE (at EBSCOhost) 

MEDLINE provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing with tree, tree hierarchy, subheadings and explosion capabilities to search citations from over 4,800 current biomedical journals.

MedlinePlus (at National Library of Medicine/National Institutes of Health) 

MedlinePlus will direct you to information to help answer health questions. MedlinePlus brings together authoritative, consumer-focused information from The National Library of Medicine (NLM), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. MedlinePlus includes extensive information about drugs and supplements, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, videos, interactive patient tutorials, and the latest health news.

Audio Drama: The L.A. Theatre Works Collection 

Volumes I and II present the most important dramatic masterpieces and contemporary plays from the archive of the nation’s premiere radio theatre company. The plays—which include some of the most significant dramatic literature of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries—showcase leading actors from around the world recorded with state-of-art sound technology. These curated titles can be used for research and instruction well beyond drama study as they give voice to underrepresented groups and address complicated historical, cultural, and social issues.

Latin America Drama 

Latin American Drama is a one-of-a-kind database with plays written by Latin American playwrights in the 19th-21st centuries. Besides serving as a rich resource for literature scholars, the collection also supports the study of American history, ethnic diversity, immigrations issues, and political history.

Contemporary World Drama 

This collection examines the richness and diversity of contemporary theatre and drama from a global context. Contemporary World Drama brings together new work from our existing playwright partners alongside work from up-and-coming playwrights from around the world, including recently produced world premieres, previously unpublished works, etc. from every continent.

Children’s Magazine Archive, 1866-2020 

The backfiles of a variety of 20th-century serials covering many aspects of children’s lives and interests. These include titles focusing on education, entertainment / literature, news, and religion / moral development. As well as shedding light on the history of childhood and family life during this period, these titles provide alternative perspectives in the study of 20th-century advertising/marketing, popular culture, education, media, and print culture.

Records of the Children’s Bureau, 1912-1969 

The Bureau’s voluminous records, including correspondence, research reports, brochures, court hearings and speeches, represent a large and important collection of primary material for the study of the family and the health and well-being of children in the twentieth century.

Child Development & Adolescent Studies 

Child Development & Adolescent Studies provides references to the current and historical literature related to growth and development of children through the age of 21 covering publications on child rights and welfare issues from 1927 – 2001. Book reviews and abstracts from hundreds of journals and a bibliography of thousands of technical reports, books, book chapters, theses and dissertations covering biomedical and social sciences worldwide are indexed in this database.
