As the Washington Policy Center (WPC) reported on King Counties lack of understanding of basic economic principles when the minimum wage was increased to $20.29, the Everett City Council is now considering an equally damaging financial move by increasing the Everett minimum wage to $20.24.

Adam Smith and the pride of making an amazing cannolo

While visiting Adam Smith’s hometown of Edinburgh recently, the best lesson about free markets and empathy came from enjoying a chocolate orange cannolo.

I was in Scotland for a conference hosted by the Competitive Enterprise Institute. The conference took as its touchstone Adam Smith’s recognition that people desire “not only to be loved, but to be lovely.”

One moment in Scotland emphasized the pride of creation that entrepreneurs have and how that makes lives better.

People demand taxpayer-financed health care — now! — from the commission trying to get it for them

Health care is expensive. Universal health care — more appropriately called taxpayer-financed health care — isn’t going to change that. It will still be expensive, and government, not doctors and patients or even insurers, will be in charge of what kind of health care is sought and paid for in such a system.

In a taxpayer-financed, government-controlled system, demand will always outstrip supply, and rationing will be required. This is the pattern of “universal” health care in other countries. Not everyone gets the care they want or need from their county’s health care system, and access and quality suffer. Taxpayers do see larger tax bills.
