Mass Extinction conference in the Institute of Natural Sciences

Today more than 42,100 species are threatened with extinction (IUCN) and more than 150,300 species are on the IUCN Red List including 41% of amphibians, 37% of sharks and rays, 36% of reef building corals, 34% of conifers, 27% of mammals, 16% of selected insects, and 13% of birds. Meanwhile, marked and abrupt anthropogenic perturbations of the cycles of elements such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and various metals together with new chemical compounds are characterizing the ‘Anthropocene’ leading to changing climate, atmosphere and marine oxygenation. It is a firm reminder of the fragility and subtle equilibrium of the environment we are living in and of which we are part. Previous mass extinctions can help us better understand and estimate the level of change, the rapidity and relations between sub-environments. Clearly, there is urgency for joining our efforts to find solutions, to profoundly rethink our use of natural resources and the way to go for the protection and restoration of our environment, planet Earth. Update of the Belgium National Biodiversity Strategy to 2030
The update of the National Biodiversity Strategy aims to align Belgium’s goals with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030. It is a significant step towards enhancing our commitment to biodiversity conservation, restoration and sustainable use.
On the 24th of June, we will introduce the updated NBS and launch the public consultation phase. We warmly invite stakeholders from all sectors within the Belgian biodiversity landscape-policy makers, scientists, private sectors and more- to join us.
Throughout this summer until the 21st of September, you are encouraged to engage and provide feedback on the proposed update of the NBS.

Benieuwd naar Phegea 52-2?
Maart was een van de meest natte maanden ooit. April was al niet veel beter! Misschien heb je tijdens die maanden in het Phegea-nummer van maart zitten lezen en is het ondertussen helemaal uit? Geen nood! Kijk hier alvast wat je mag verwachten in het juninummer.
Volgende vergadering in het Vrieselhof op zaterdag 15 juni 2024
Hierbij worden alle leden van de V.V.E. uitgenodigd op de bijeenkomst in het Vrieselhof (Ranst-Oelegem) van 14.00 tot 17.00 uur, met mogelijkheid om de herwerkte collecties te bezoeken en de nieuwste entomologische literatuur te raadplegen.
Meld je wel op voorhand aan zodat we een overzicht krijgen van het aantal aanwezigen. Stuur daarvoor een mailtje naar Guido of contacteer het meldpunt op 0485 568 781.

The genus Carabus in Belgium
Ons medelid, Ief Peeters, schreef zijn ervaringen en kennis over het genus Carabus neer in een vlot lezend boek van 260 pagina's. Het boek bevat niet minder dan 389 kleurenfoto's en de tekst is in het Engels opgesteld omwille van de internationale interesse voor dit genus.

Catalogue of the Lepidoptera of Belgium
Aan de website "Catalogue of the Lepidoptera of Belgium" wordt door enkele admins dagelijks gewerkt. Vooral voor de dagvlinders zoeken we nog medewerkers. Wil je graag teksten of foto's toevoegen, neem dan contact op met Jurate De Prins. Wil je zelf geen admin worden maar je beschikt wel over foto's van dagvlinders of motten (en zeker van hun eerste stadia) neem dan contact op met Jurate De Prins of Chris Steeman.
