May’s Pasture Moon

The old German name for May’s moon is the Pasture Moon. As anyone who has ever had to mow a lawn knows, May is the season where grass starts growing. I assume it’s probably the best time to start grazing your livestock.

Making a Moon

Originally, I had planned to make the moon sculpture looking over a pasture, but I didn’t like the idea of having the ground dangling with the rest of the design. Here’s the draft sketch of the moon that might have been. A nice design, but probably not the best for a hanging ornament.

So, I tried sketching a moon with a grassy hat, a sheep bell, and grass patches on it’s face (I eneded up dropping the grass patches in the final design.) Here’s the draft sketch of this version:
