It's here. Today for the first time PorchFest in Franklin. Multiple locations, time slots, and so many performers.

Franklin's PorchFest 2024 is happening today

 

Something Old and Something New at Franklin Historical Museum!

This summer, the Franklin Historical Museum welcomes the return of the Bridal Gown Exhibit, Something Old and Something New! 

 

Bridal Gown Exhibit

See gowns worn by Franklin brides in a range of fashions throughout the decades, from the late 1800s right up to the 2000s. Each gown carries with it a unique story, preserving the hopes and dreams of each bride on her special day for generations to come. Our 2024 exhibit features the highly requested 1946 parachute dress with the amazing 15-foot train, constructed of Japanese parachute silk.

Don't miss our ribbon-cutting ceremony this Saturday, June 1 at 2:30 PM by two fashionably attired “flower girls” and the string section of the MetroWest Symphony Orchestra (MSO) ‘belting out’ Mendelssohn’s Wedding March. The exhibit opening is in coordination with Franklin’s first ever PorchFest in which MSO and two other performers will be sharing the museum porch. The museum will be open special hours, from 10 AM to 6 PM and PorchFest runs from noon to 6.

And the fun continues through Sunday, August 4 during regular museum hours, Saturdays 10 to 1 and Sundays 1 to 4.

Bridal Exhibit Speakers in June and July

• The Second Sunday Speaker Series at the museum continues on June 9, 2024 with a focus on our famous Parachute Dress – a wedding dress made from a World War II parachute with a spectacular 15-foot train.  Historical Commission Chair Alan Earls will talk about the social history and wartime pressures that brought tens of thousands of parachutes into service for the military, some of which eventually found their way back into the civilian economy. Doors open at 1 and the presentation begins at 1:15 at Franklin Historical Museum, 80 West Central Street, Franklin, MA. FREE
• The July Second Sunday Speaker, July, 2024 will be fashion expert, Ren (Karen) Antonowicz is from Spirits of Fashion, discussing some of the styles and details of dresses on display as well as the broader trends they represented. Doors open at 1 and the presentation begins at 1:15 at Franklin Historical Museum, 80 West Central Street, Franklin, MA. FREE

FUSF schedules Special Pride Month Sunday Service - June 2

On June 2, 2024 the First Universalist Society of Franklin (FUSF), a Welcoming Congregation, will be celebrating Pride Month at their 10:00 AM service. The Welcoming Congregation designation of the Unitarian Universalist Association means we intentionally include LGBTQIA individuals in all aspects of congregational life and provide safe spaces that honor every part of our identities, backgrounds, and experiences.

This service will focus on the importance of allies in the lives of LGBTQIA individuals and what it means for people of all ages, gender expressions and sexual orientations to have a Welcoming Congregation such as FUSF welcome them fully into our community.

Multi-Family Yard Sale, June 15

St. John’s Episcopal Church is hosting a multi-family yard sale on Saturday, June 15, from 9 AM to 2 PM. Come to the front lawn at 237 Pleasant Street in Franklin and you will find all sorts of treasures.

Shop for housewares, home decor, furniture, toys and games, seasonal decorations, and more.  Proceeds fund the mission of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

School Committee approves Pledge agreement to focus on getting override passed (audio)

FM #1222 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1222 in the series. 

This session shares the Franklin (MA) School Committee meeting held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. All seven members of the Committee were present in the Council Chambers. 

Quick recap:

• Multiple Parmenter students led the pledge of allegiance

• FHS "Seal of Biliteracy" students were recognized

• School retirees were recognized for their years of service

• The Franklin Education Foundation is going to close out as an organization and turn over their remaining funds to a new "revolving account" for the School District to continue the grant program. Details remain to be worked out on the final amount of the contribution and within the District on how the grant process will work

• District Improvement Plan updated 

• Superintendent evaluation data provided to the Committee in preparation for their formal review scheduled for June 18

• Discussion and vote on the override pledge document. Questions remain on exactly how much the schools will get in years 2 and beyond as the pledge doc is inconsistent in providing the info. As the successful override is the primary matter of focus, the Committee did vote to approve the pledge (5 for, 1 no, 1 abstain). The funding for FY 2026 and future can be addressed after the override is determined

• Preview of the proposed fee schedule to be implemented if the override fails. Staffing cuts were also provided in a summary format, as there are multiple scenarios where a position cut could trigger a chain reaction where the person fulfilling that position ends up bumping someone else to remain employed per seniority and certification as set within the contracts

• Committee entered executive session not to return to open meeting just before 11 PM
