There are a million and one career choices out there.

And any one of the million jobs out there could be a great fit for you.

Enter, the tyranny of choice. Also referred to as Choice Overload. A term first introduced in 1970 by author Alvin Toffler, where essential choice overload happens when we have so many options available to us, that the idea of being able to weigh up the potential pros and cons becomes too overwhelming to be possible.

Picture the scene. You sit down to start your job search, and 657 open browser tabs later you are completely overwhelmed and overwrought with uncertainty, dread and complete decision paralysis. Sound familiar?

You’re not alone. As humans we make on average 35,000 decisions per day, and so throwing something as significant as changing job or even career path entirely is certain to get your heart rate up.

A failsafe suggestion that has been a success during our Career Change Accelerator Programme, is the act of shifting your mindset to avoid getting trapped in analysis paralysis, and instead having a bias towards action. In practical terms this can mean ideating several options and then getting moving, by quickly learning as much as you can about each option - by talking to people, researching and equipping yourself with the knowledge to make an informed decision. The more decisions you make, the better you’ll get at making choices. And the further away from the tyranny of choice you’ll get.
