Early Season Focus is Upon Plant Growth

At this early point in the season, growers should focus on the healthy growth of their young plants. A big, healthy root system will fuel and support the development of huge, orange fruit later in the season. To accomplish this, create the ideal growing environment for your plants.

Rich soil, ample amounts of well-rotted compost, and a regular application of fertilizers rich in micro-nutrients provide the fuel your plants need for the stellar growth of these plants. When July arrives, those big, vigorous vines will produce lots of male and female flowers, and the pollination period will begin. But, to get there, the vines need to grow as quickly as possible. The more leaves on the vine, the bigger your fruit will be.

Gardening Tip

Your rich garden soil and the granular fertilizer you apply help your young plants to grow vigorously and strongly. Additionally, you can apply liquid fertilizer to foliar feed the plants, too. Mix a light application of liquid fertilizer and generously water the leaves. Very quickly, you will notice the difference. The plants will grow quick and healthy. And the leaves will turn a darker green. More on foliar feeding your plants.

Pumpkin Growing Tips for Early Season Care

  • Feed me, feed me – The plants have voracious appetites. During early season growth, focus on the nitrogen content in fertilizer to fuel growth. Be ever watchful out for early season pests. They can harm the plant, sucking on vital plant juices. And, they can spread disease from plant to plant. Tops on the list of harmful insects is the cucumber beetle. The cucumber beetle and many other insects are controlled by an application of Sevin or other insecticides.
  • Weed the patch. Keep your garden well-weeded. Weeds compete with other plants for moisture and nutrients in the soil.  And, they can shade the leaves of your plants, robbing them of energy-producing sunlight.
  • Provide a constant supply of water – Keep the soil moist, but not wet at all times. Steady moisture levels translate into steady growth.
  • Cover the vines with an inch or two of garden soil. This promotes secondary root growth and results in much bigger pumpkins.
