WHEN DOES THE DIGITAL CHANGEOVER START? In the early hours of 17th October 2007 around 25,000 households will be the first to have the old analogue signal switched off (Whitehaven, Western Cumbria, UK), then by 2012 most TV signals will be broadcasting as digital signals.
WHAT IS DIGITAL CHANGEOVER OR SWITCHOVER ABOUT ? Digital TV Changeover is the process when the Government turns off the analogue broadcast television to converted to digital television in an area or in this case nation-wide, also referred to as analogue switch off OR switchover .
ARE MANY PEOPLE OR REGIONS AWARE OF THE CHANGE ? Ofcom estimate that 63% of households are already using television, while market researchers GfK show that 48 per cent of televisions sold between April and June were analogue and nearly half of all televisions sold over the past three months are old-fashioned analogue sets. CAN OLD ANALOGUE TV's GET DIGITAL ? Yes, the five existing terrestrial TV channels will continue to be available free-to-view via digital TV. The new free digital subscription service from the BBC and ITV announces, digital high definition satellite TV for the Euro 2008 matches. Freesat will be available in free high definition on channels BBC HD and ITV HD, it is estimated that over 10'000 viewers have HDTV's. Virgin and Sky TV will also show the games.

While in 2005 USA congress approved a bill to insure a new deadline of 2009for the final switch to digital TV in the US. By this time, all American TVs must be able to receive a digital signal and the major broadcast networks (NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC, UPN, WB) will have to broadcast 100% of programming in a digital format.
While most of the country will still have acces to analogue, on 12th August 2009 Swansea will be the fisrt in Wales to be switched to the new digital services. The countdown will really begin by the end of August 2009, as most of Wales will be switched over to Digital and analogue switched off. Digital TV is well on its way and by 2010 half of the UK will have been switched over. The switch over is due to complete for the 2012 Olympics.
