Leveraging landscape architecture for conservation
May 30, 2024 | Written by Molly SchaferUniversity of Delaware alumna Juliahna Mistretta is leveraging her landscape architecture degree for conservation. This summer, Mistretta will complete a master’s degree in global biodiversity conservation at the University of Sussex in Brighton, United Kingdom. As part of an effort to record the park's biodiversity, Mistretta collected and identified bats and beetles in Africa’s Kasanka National Park. Mistretta will combine her master's degree with her BLA from UD to create sustainable spaces that foster biodiversity and give back to the community. -

First spotted in Delaware in 2020, the bug threatens the beauty of these beloved trees. The pest is now active in Sussex and Kent counties but is yet to be seen in New Castle County. -

Her decision was influenced by immersive experiences in two Cooperative Extension programs, where she realized her true passion lay in the broader field of food and agriculture. Kirby’s switch exposed her to interactive classes that blend traditional business and marketing skills with a specialized focus on the food and agriculture industry. With high demand for graduates in the food and agriculture sector, Kirby will soon apply her marketing and nutrition skills to a career in food and agribusiness marketing. -

The event, hosted by faculty member Vincenzo Ellis, and Lauren O’Brien, acting senior assistant dean and academic program manager, helps students gain etiquette skills to prepare them to enter the professional world as well as help students network with other students and faculty members in the college. -

Cooperative Extension fulfills the third part of this mission: bringing knowledge to the people of Delaware. Today, we offer university knowledge, research and resources — just for you!

The UD College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Newark Farm is a testament to the college's more than 150 years of innovation and education. Covering 350 acres on the main campus, it's a hands-on learning hub for students and faculty, exploring animals, crops, wetlands, and greenhouses.
