October 8 - Till Marco von Wachter (Zoom Online - "In person" meetings at Faculty Center cancelled for now) Our cherished and long-time member, Don Nelson, passed away on Saturday, September 19.Don was a dedicated member of Rotary for 47 years.During that time, he served this Club generously and in so many capacities.He was a Rotarian of the Year (2003), Past President (2005/2006), Paul Harris Fellow, Paul Harris Society member, Benefactor, John Sandman Fellow and a Major Donor. Our thoughts and prayers are with Don's lovely and devoted wife of 71 years, Roz, and the rest of his family and loved ones. Don also had a successful business career and was a retired CPA and parter with Deloitte Touche. Barely a week after the passing of Don Nelson, our long-time (since 1968) member, Don Park, also passed away. Don's family has asked if anyone wants to send a card or other remembrance of Don to please send it to Don's daughter, Pam Rigney, at 10256 Cresta Drive in LA, CA 90064. Don was a renowned architect. Among his many achievements was the former YMCA building on La Grange. Don became quite involved with the Y from that point forward. To the right is an example of Don's fine work (The Stone Residence in Los Feliz).Attached are pages from a book describing Don's work. Don's grandaughter, Meghan Alyssa Rigney, remarked that Many of his original clients still resided in the homes that were designed 40 to 50 years ago, each expressing nearly the same gratitude to my grandfather for designing such a beautiful, functional, well thought out home that stands tjhe test of time. Tillvon Wachteris Professor of Economics at the University of California Los Angeles, Faculty Director of the California Policy Lab, Director of the Federal Statistical Research Data Center, and Associate Dean for Research for the Social Science Division. Prof. von Wachter's research examines how labor market conditions and institutions affect the well-being of workers and their families. This includes the analysis of unemployment and job loss on workers' long-term earnings and health outcomes, as well as the role of unemployment insurance and disability insurance in buffering such shocks. Current research projects focus on job and earnings mobility of young workers over their careers, the effects of minimum wages, as well as several projects on homelessness using administrative data from Los Angeles. Professor von Wachter's research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute on Aging, the Social Security Administration, the Sloan Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, the Hilton Foundation, and Arnold Ventures. He will discuss the CARES Act and the effect on California's growing deficit. April Pyle, Ph.D., seeks to develop a better understanding of human pluripotent stem cells, which can self-renew as well as produce any cell type in the body through a process called differentiation. Through pursuing a better understanding of the biological processes that drive pluripotent stem cell self-renewal and differentiation, Pyle is gaining insights that could unlock the potential of stem cell-based treatments for a host of diseases.Dr. Pyle is particularly interested in how pluripotent stem cells differentiate into skeletal muscle cells, which are affected by many muscle-wasting disorders, including Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a lethal genetic disease that affects approximately 1 in 5,000 boys in the U.S. Pyle's extensive study of the biological underpinnings of Duchenne muscular dystrophy has led to several significant breakthroughs. She and her colleagues have developed an approach to correct the genetic defect that causes Duchenne and recently, her lab devised strategies to generate somites, the cells that give rise to skeletal muscles, bones and cartilage during development, as well as create skeletal muscle cells from human pluripotent stem cells. Each of these discoveries represents a major step towards the development of a cell replacement therapy for Duchenne.Another aim of Pyle's work is to identify the signals that balance survival and self-renewal in stem cells in order to prevent instability that can lead to tumor development. Cancer is caused by mutations to genes that lead to abnormal cell growth and, like other cells, stem cells are vulnerable to this cancer-causing mutation. By examining how stem cells survive, differentiate and self-renew in a dish, Pyle hopes to uncover how this process may go awry and lead to cancer. It is her hope that this understanding could help to improve clinicians' ability to prevent, detect or treat cancer.Pyle received her doctorate degree from the University of Tennessee and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.
